We were lucky to catch up with Klaudia Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Klaudia, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to start over, I would learn how to buy supplies the smart way and not the fast way out. As a small business owner you want to make sure you get the supplies quick and easy, however I had to learn that it is okay to wait an extra week or two, maybe even a month or two. Sometimes we can be impatient and wanting to express our creativity. As of recently, I learned that lesson and it has made so much of a big difference with the spending and supplies. I have a great finance coach (my mom), who’s taught me to become more organized.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi! I’m Klaudia, founder and owner of glossy by klaudia! I’ve been in business for two years now, I own a handmade cosmetic business. It all started out with lip glosses, then slowly started bringing in lip scrubs and lip balm. A year into business, I brought in skin care products. All products are researched and trial based for 6+ months. As far as what sets me apart from others, majority of my skin products are primarily targeted to sensitive skin. After being encouraged to make my own body butter, I finally took it upon myself to do research and went ahead and did it! I, myself have sensitive skin and it is very hard to find that right product that won’t break out or dry my skin. My business isn’t just gloss and glow, it is to give people the boost in their confidence they already have. Protecting their skin barrier by soothing it with handmade body butter. Let’s all stay glossy!
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Luckily I’ve never missed a business phone call, or small business meeting. But I have caught a close call on missing the quarterly sales tax due date! I usually have EVERYTHING scheduled. Whether it is written down in my planner, my dry erase board or scheduled on my calendar on my phone. I had my excel sheet for that quarter and all my numbers down, I just never submitted everything until last minute. 20 minutes before it was due to be exact, and my laptop was running slow. It. was so horrible. Ever since then, I have a reminder set a month before it is due so I won’t miss it.
All sorts of reminders, planners, schedules are a MUST.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation in my market was by introducing myself in person at market events/pop-ups. Simple handshake can go a long way. Even following people on social media and talking through there. Honestly, social media is the key in communicating and marketing; especially for business.
