We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yichi Chou. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yichi below.
Hi Yichi, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
When I was in my Bachelor of Digital Media Design in Taiwan, I learned a lot of software and fundamental knowledge of design, such as illustration, animations, video editing, and the fundamental website. I thought the design was to create a beautiful and good project; however, I didn’t think too much about why I wanted to do this but just know I love design, creating something. In the last year of my bachelor’s, my senior thesis project was a website about the disappearing industry of handmade paper. It includes the process of papermaking and an interactive papermaking game to make its own digital handmade paper. This project reminds me why I want to be a good designer. I want to create beautiful things but also deliver concepts and stories to people. The importance of design is not just about creating, but also really solving people’s problems and helping viewers understand the messages.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I had a chance to learn Motion Media Design and studied abroad at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). I found Motion Design is a powerful communication tool to convey concepts or ideas and connect to viewers. During my internship, I honed my Motion Design skills in marketing elements such as email campaigns, social media content, advertising, e-commerce websites, and in-store digital displays. Also, collaboration with Product Designers to create UI Motion concepts for smartwatch displays allowed me to bridge the gap between design and motion. I believe Motion Design serves as a powerful tool for effective communication and problem-solving, providing users with instant clarity and elevating their overall experience.
Throughout my career, I have gained valuable experience in both agency and in-house brand marketing teams. I also learned lots of knowledge about Motion Design, including creating graphic designs, illustrations, animations, and motion videos from initial concepts, storyboards, and styleframes, to final animations. I believe Motion Design serves as a powerful tool for effective communication and problem-solving, providing users with instant clarity and elevating their overall experience.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
At the beginning of studying abroad, it was tough, and encountered a lot of difficulties and challenges; however, I learned so much, not only Motion Design but also other abilities, such as problem-solving, adaptability, and responsibility. Therefore, these taught me to become an independent and stronger person and also gave me different experiences and perspectives to write my stories. These definitely became assets to my design career.
These adversities have proven to be valued in their imperfections, but it is the best treasures of life. As a result, I created Motion Graphics to visualize my stories, Time Capsule, and I would like to record these times. Luckily, it was featured in the Top Talent of 2019 Adobe Award. I am grateful but I understand that design and challenges won’t stop and it could make me elevate and improve.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Design is an amazing tool for people to use and communicate. I want to apply what I learned to help people understand products, services, or even an idea, such as when I was working in-house product company. People don’t know how to use our products but they can watch our motion educational video to deeply understand how it works.
I would like to explore the possibility of Motion Design and create or deliver a new breed of integrated, digital experiences, like the UX Motion Design field. Motion is a bridge for viewers to feel a natural way of interacting with things and it’s absolutely critical to the design of the future.
