We were lucky to catch up with FILFURY recently and have shared our conversation below.
FILFURY, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
An on going collaboration with myself and GO Athletics has to be one of my most meaningful projects to date… I often find my favorite work is that with limited resources, it makes me think of creative solutions that can be executed with minimal components. BUT still be powerful and meet my expectations of high craft level.
I met Rene (founder of GO) a few years ago, and on first meeting he told me about his passion for helping people be the best they can be, empowering the youth and uplifting the community. These values aligned with where I want my skills to help people, so knew this was something I had to be part of.
Over the past couple of years I’ve shot and directed multiple films, photoshoots, designed apparel and shaped the identity of the brand.
I do this work because I love it, I love being part of something bigger than me, I love being able to help. I want GO Athletics to continue to grow and become what it deserves to be. I love using my skills to help people, but tbh it goes both ways – Rene has taught me a lot, he’s a super creative person also and it’s the combination of our skills, the willingness to be open and learn from one another that makes it such a successful and rewarding partnership.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m FILFURY, a British artist, designer and director living in Los Angeles.
Originally from the UK, where I trained as a graphic designer – my style has evolved to tell stories within film, animation and art – with my unique graphic touch.
I make everything from music videos, album art, car commercials, high end fashion films, live action, luxury CG animation and motion graphics, to digital art and physical sculptures.
My bold and graphic style has attracted work from some of the world’s biggest brands as well as internationally renowned musicians. I have a strong design aesthetic to my visuals, and an ability to switch effortlessly from creating digital art executions and motion design to directing cinematic live-action commercials and film.
Creative highlights include commercials for Rolls-Royce, Estée Lauder, the NFL, Ford Mustang, Mercedes and Epic Games, artwork for Brit Award winner J Hus, music videos for Imagine Dragons, Idris Elba, LIL TJAY, Koffee and MJ Cole, apparel for Nike Basketball, World Cup visuals with Adidas, campaign sculptural art for Philipp Plein and physical installation sculpture work with Size? in their flagship store in Amsterdam.
I love what I do. I look after a project from start to finish, from initial concept, pitch, design, shoot, all the way through edit and post production. My knowledge of all the essential disciplines sees me lead a piece this way, not only out of necessity but because I know what I want and wouldn’t have it any other way. I care passionately about every aspect of the projects I direct.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission is self improvement, knowledge, experience, fun… striving to be the best me I can be… I feel blessed I get to do what I do everyday. Growing up I didn’t know about careers in art and design and once I realized it was possible I’ve never looked back. I live my creative life balancing an ego that tells myself I’m a winner and this is yours for the taking, with you don’t know what you’re doing, how are you getting away with this… so with that in mind I chase new heights of what’s possible with my skills, I’m open to opportunities, don’t take anything for granted and enjoy the ride.
I feel I owe it to myself to see how far I can take this, you only get one shot at this. LFG.
If anyone younger is reading this and wants advice, help on how to get started… hit me up! I’m here to share the knowledge and bring people through.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I didn’t grow up with any creative mentors to show me the path ahead. I’m making this up as I go… but I’m super passionate about my craft, hungrier than ever and it’s taken me all over the world. I know I’m built different, I have a resilience that allows me to keep going, keep finding new opportunities and adventures to pursue. If something doesn’t go my way I pick myself up and go again, be that a country move, a job or a relationship… I’ve moved house 20 times in 20 years… you just gotta keep moving forward.
The reality with working in the commercial world is you only see what I’ve won, what got made… No one sees what I’ve lost… I lose constantly… but you push on.
