We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bianca Crosby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bianca below.
Hi Bianca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
Building an empire can be extremely challenging and hard. Especially when you have the plan already in your head and you don’t know where to start. My name is Bianca Crosby and I am a streetwear fashion designer from Chicago IL. Before, I became a well known designer, I was just known as the girl that modeled and had a large social media presence. I knew I had to make a plan up in order for people to see me past that, and see me as the designer I am. I had so much to show the world and at the Time the only thing I knew that could help me was first being consistent. I was born and raised on the south side and finished my journey on the west side where I also started building my brand. At a very young age I knew I wanted to be very successful. I had gift of creativity, and I always wanted to create something. I learned how to draw in grammar school and thats when I learned how to create design sketches. By the time I was in 7th grade, I had, had several design books full of designs I would create and draw while in class. As I got older I begin to realize that was something I wanted to do. I had no cue how I was going to get it done but I knew I had to. I started out by going to the thrift store and picking out clothes I can recreate and do patch work on. I use t design my own clothes and where them to school. By this time I was in high school, and I already had some popularity. By freshman year I was just designing and taking pictures in the clothes I had created. I was self promoting my clothes before I even knew it but I was very confident In my creations. As, every creative should be because the second step from consistency is having confidence. You have to trust that any business you are creating you are self promoting as much as possible because you have to believe I you brand before the buyer do.
So, by sophomore year I knew I wanted to get serious and I knew I needed a name for my brand. Knew it had to mean something that lasted forever, so some kids at my lunch table told me to call it “WAVS”. because “wavs last forever. They’ll forever repeat in the water. And, in that moment I became the owner and creator of WAVS Merchandise.
As I became more serious with my brand, I started to invest in myself. That’s the most important step of all the other steps. especially, when you are the mastermind behind the machine. I started investing in machines I need to Make the shirts and I started to learn to use my grandma sewing machine. I worked regular jobs and saved up all my checks so that one day I can manufacture. I stayed consistent, I had confidence in my brand and I invested in myself to make sure I turned my dreams into a reality, By, the time I graduated high school, WAVS had already gain large social media presence and I was on my way to collage to study fashion design, but unfortunately that did not work out for me because I wanted to continue to stay focus on my brand and nothing else. 2 years later, I finality was able to start working in the factories and sending my designs off. I went from sewing and making everything myself on hand believing that one day I will be able to manufacture, to finally dropping, now, several factory projects. It wasn’t easy at all however, I stuck to the plan and I trusted myself to get the job done. Because I knew giving up wasn’t going to get me there faster.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I started designing when I was around 13years old. I came out around the time, where not to many people at all had clothing lines and it was not any easy thing to get Into. A lot of resources wasn’t provided to people like me that wanted to make heir own clothes, unless you had lot of money. So you had to hustle, and no one really wanted to help me so I was forced to figure It out myself. The biggest lesson I Toke from that’s to appreciate my brand more, because I literally had to fight so hard for it, and Still. WAVS, is more than a luxury streetwear brand. It’s a movement, and a culture. A lot of people grew with us and watched our journey. WAVS is more known for their creative designs and comfortability. Im most proud as well on how versatile I made my brand. Allowing, men and women to be able to wear the merch. It has been 6years now since WAVS has exist. Now and days, because social media, so many other creative are able to share their designs and creations. And, to help them, WAVS sells 21+ manufacture list to designers that are looking for production homes. I started doing this because all the time designers from everywhere will message me and say that they are looking for help and or looking for a production home. WAVS has sold over 100 manufactures to different designers all around the world. Helping inspire young designers and let them know they are not alone like I was when I first started, helps me grow as a creator. I learn something from every designer that inspire to change the world through fashion.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative, is that I can create whatever world I want to live in at the moment and no one else option matter because it’s Mine. Being a creative doesn’t just stop at making clothes, but its the experience you make out of it. its how you build it and the energy you give to it.
Whatever you make something or create it yours so you make the rules for it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One reason I work so hard, because one day I want WAVS to became a household name when it come to the fashion word. And it will with time and patience. I want to continue to work hard and keep dropping collections for the masses. In the near future I will be expanding my brand into different ventures.
