We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristy Mickelsen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristy, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am Currently working on a project called Christmas for the seniors of Amarillo, where I will be hosting a Christmas party for the residents of our local nursing home. I have been very blessed in my life and career so I felt it was time that I gave back and I look forward to spending time with some wonderful members of my community.
My team and I will be decorating the party room of the facility with a tree and other Christmas decor, and we will be passing out gifts as well having snacks, games, and Yes I will be doing a book signing and passing out free copies of one of my books
A Christmas To Remember.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kristy Mickelsen. I am a Romance Book Author, a podcast host and an Advocate for causes such as cancer, autism and lupus awareness. I started dabbling in acting and plus size modeling. My career started seven years ago as a challenge from my autistic son. He wanted me to try writing as a professional career since it was always my dream. When I said no son I’m not good enough he dared me and I took the challenge.
The rest is history!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building a presence on social media is so important to your name and or brand. I think the most important thing to remember is to start where you are comfortable, and grow from there. So if you are more comfortable on Facebook or Twitter then start there. But don’t use your personal page. Start a professional page and put a mix of content that relates not just to your brand but to you as a person as well. Remember to be professional at all times to. Your social media accounts and how you behave on them will follow you and your career.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think people that are not in the creative industry would struggle with understanding how our crazy world works and how we thrive in it. For example as a Book Author my characters “talk to me” at all hours of the night. Sometimes I will jump out of bed just write a thought or scene down on paper before I forget it.
Or as an audio host I need to record a topic that maybe on my mind right at that moment…
Sometimes we get so busy in our world creating content, or whatever else we do for our industry that we Sometimes tend to put people and other projects to the side until we can quiet our creative monkeys…
Sometimes it’s a crazy creative world we live in but also so very rewarding.
