We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deuce B a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deuce thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve been recording music since my freshman year in high school and built a pretty decent fanbase at a young age. However, I didn’t decide to invest in myself and take music seriously as a career until just a few years ago. I think taking it seriously earlier and taking advantage of the fanbase I built would’ve put me in a better place career wise, but at the same time, I’ve learned a lot creatively and would rather be successful with my current sound than with the sound I had back then.

My name is Deuce B, hip-hop artist hailing from Houston, Texas, whose music is both reminiscent of the city’s classic southern sound and the lyricism of mixtape Lil Wayne. I currently live in San Diego, but I’ve performed all over, opening for artists like Father, Lil B, and Maxo Kream. I pride myself as not only being a lyricist, but also making music to vibe to. My music often delves into the complexities of love and relationships as well as every day struggles like dealing with and overcoming common anxieties faced daily by millions. I’d say I’m uniquely thoughtful while simultaneously embodying the role of the Everyman.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
No one will save you. What I mean is, you have to do the work yourself before anyone will agree to help you. I used to think that I’d be signed to a label just because I was good. I thought I didn’t need to learn how to record myself properly because one day, I’d be successful enough to have someone do that for me. That’s definitely not the case. You have to show that you can do the work and do it consistently for others to flock and support you. There are no short cuts!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The actual act of creating. It’s a beautiful process, especially when you create with others. Everyone has a unique process, and you get a deep understanding about who someone is by watching them work. Probably a reason why creatives find themselves surrounded by other creatives.
