Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick Ferrell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nick, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Having worked for the Federal Government for over 15 years, first for Department of Defense then Department of State, I miss being in the thick of things. The majority of my tours were war zones in the Near East, so its easy to miss the adrenaline rush of finding yourself in an ambiguous situation facing problems that require immediate solutions. However, I don’t miss the non-stop requirements of my time then – as a business owner, I am still busy, but I dictate whats important and – most importantly – what isn’t. I am also able to use my previous skillsets as both an analyst and then diplomat to build relationships with our clients, resulting in additional trust and more fruitful business transactions. The most fulfilling? Being on the hunt for new and interesting historical background on the watches we sell, and then crafting these stories for my audience. I never tire of this hunt.

Nick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At DC Vintage Watches (DCVW), we concentrate on sourcing exceptional vintage watches and providing outstanding service to our customers. Since we sold our first watch in 2012, we’ve been committed to carrying only products we ourselves would buy, because we will never stand behind a watch we ourselves wouldn’t enjoy.
Each one of the vintage watches we source for our clients has its own unique story to tell, which we do our best to tell – doing the research to find these stories is half the thrill of the vintage watch hunt, and we do it well. We sell watches online, on our website, and we also source watches – rare or otherwise – clients ask us to find for them.
We bring the same customer service and dedication to all of our customers, regardless of the watch in question, and we love to see the passion our customers – those new to watches and long time aficionados – espouse.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started quite small – I used savings to buy an initial 10 vintage watches, and – tired of paying egregious eBay seller fees – made the jump from an occasional sale on eBay to starting a website. I then set about doing the research to tell the stories behind these watches, and began social media accounts to spread the message!

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
At the beginning of the pandemic and lock down, all small businesses owners I spoke with were terrified – no one knew what this would mean for our livelihoods. I started saving what funds I could, not certain of what the future held. Months later, the online businesses were thriving as people that could work from home flocked to the internet for shopping of, well, everything – vintage watches included.
