We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole De La Fuente a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When the pandemic first started I was a junior in highschool. This gave me a lot of free time and motivation to creative videos and start posting on social media. I’ve always had a passion for the fashion industry so it was very natural to frame my concepts around fashion. After a few months of posting regularly, my following began to grow and I realized I could create a career out of something I loved.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started posting on TikTok just for fun when quarantine first started. I was a junior in Highschool and the embarrassment of posting on social media faded because I was alone at home everyday. I would make fashion related content every once in a while, but it eventually became addictive. I loved using social media as a platform to express my creativity. As I continued to do so and quarantine ended I no longer felt embarrassed because I was expressing my self and enjoyed creating content. I’ve been in love with fashion since I can remember. My dream job as a child was to have my own clothing company. Once I started posting on social media I realized this dream could one day become a reality.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started social media for myself, it was entertaining to create videos and take photos. When I started to gain a following I began to view social media as a job which took away my creativity for a while. It’s very important to have balance in this industry. Having a social media presence means posting content almost daily and sharing a big portion of your life with the world. I’ve had times where I focus to much on posting everyday and less of the quality of my content. This eventually leads to me not feel motivated or creative. I recommend when in moments like that to take a step back and remember why you started and why you love to create content. Sometimes it’s necessary to take some days for yourself and rejuvenate your creative juices.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ve learned through my followers the struggle many of them have in expressing themselves through fashion. It is easy to put off clothes but not as easy to truly style them. It’s been very rewarding knowing I’ve helped people find their own style through mine. Through inspiration from my videos I’ve seen my followers expand their fashion sense drastically. It might been unimportant for a person to have a sense of style but to me it’s a gate to their individual self. It shows me their confidence, interests, and skill.
