We were lucky to catch up with Neon Nash recently and have shared our conversation below.
Neon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew that I wanted to be a singer ever since I was little. I’ve always had a passion for music and was practically singing every chance I could get. I was obsessed with musicals and attended voice lessons when I was 11. And I’m really thankful for that time, I really feel like it helped me hone my skills enough to pursue singing professionally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nash Taylor, but I’m known by my stage name, Neon Nash. I’m a Nerdcore singer/songwriter and rapper based in Los Angeles California and I make music themed after nerd culture like anime and video games. I first debuted with my breakout EP ‘Leo Energy’ in 2022 and have been making music ever since. Once I had officially begun to pursue my calling in music I quickly found my place within the nerdcore genre. I’ve been a fan of anime and video games since before I can remember, so it was a natural choice for me to choose that as subject matter for my art. Now I just make as much music as I can and do my best to make sure it can be loved by both anime fans and music lovers alike, even if you don’t watch anime.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started out on social media as a cosplayer / comedian on YouTube. I grew my initial audience through the comedy skits and parodies I would make while in cosplay. This eventually lead to me doing the same type of content on TikTok as well where I often went viral for my content. I had some really amazing opportunities where I was able to collaborate with brands like Viz Media and Fortnite, but in 2022 I finally decided to pursue my dream of being a singer/songwriter. It was scary at first because I wasn’t sure how my audience would react to me doing something so different but they were overall very supportive about it. I frequently use cosplay to promote my music and try to make fun, new content themed around whatever anime or game my songs are about. I think it’s really the best of both worlds now.
I think my advice to someone wanting to start being a content creator is to find what makes you the happiest to make and just start. Even if you’re scared or think it’s taking a risk, go for it!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The one thing that was really holding me back before I started music was my fear. I had a lot of fear and anxiety to get through in the years before I started music. I knew that I’d always wanted to be a singer but I wasn’t sure how to start and I had a lot of self doubt; starting with a really bad fear of singing in front of others. I would call up my friends and video chat with them just to have them listen to me sing so I could overcome my fear. It wasn’t until my first EP was finished that I finally had to let go of my fear and jump forward into my dream fully. And I’m so glad that I did, making music is one of the biggest achievements of my life.
