Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laydee Lyrix. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Laydee, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Ever since a young age, I’ve been driven to express my spiritual nature through music whether it be on stage, on camera, or in the studio, I have been singing and dancing my whole life, I even acted in a few productions when I was 10. Growing up with an undiagnosed, unnoticed learning disability I always had trouble communicating with people and comprehending what I was reading. I found that music was the only way to connect with my peers and even relate to my elders. Coming from a background of musicians and creatives, it’s no surprise that I would inherit this gene and pursue it even further to make a career of it. I feel I was raised in an environment that nurtured these gifts as my mother had me in everything from ballet/gymnastics to piano and singing, I even studied the violin in high school and can still play both instruments by ear. I have always dreamed of being a professional musician who travels the world and gets to see lots of new places, become immersed in the culture, and then interpret what I see/feel in my own art.
Laydee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
It was around the end of high school that I began to write songs and grew a passion for the spoken word genre of rap/hip hop, one of my friends convinced me I should try to enter a rap battle league that was starting in our local town. Fearless me knowing nothing of the craft agreed to compete. I was surprised to find the first opponent chosen for me was also my very first producer who recorded my first original songs. This was a challenge as I felt awkward and again was very new to the scene and instead of preparing a written verse I freestyled off the top. I later learned this was not how battles work and did continued to perform at these events for a few years to come. Feeling unfulfilled by not only the actual performances but afterward I decided no matter how much exposure these events were getting me I was determined to find another way to express and perform on stage. This is when I did some touring opening up for other acts as a supporting artist, by the time I was 20 I had won a music video grant and was even flown out to Winnipeg to do a live taping show with APTN. While this was great and my career was taking off, fate had different plans in store for me so at 22 I welcomed my beautiful baby girl into the world. This caused a brief pause while I raised her as a single mother and I overcame the challenges of having to be the main support system. This meant I had to take a restaurant job which did serve its purpose but also kept life rather still and often the same day in and day out. I was numb and felt like I was desperate for a new awakening and for passion to be restored, 2019 answered that call and I randomly saw an ad on Instagram for an international music competition called Coast 2 Coast Live so I thought what the heck I will enter a music video I did back in 2016 and as luck would have it I placed 3 internationally in a music video competition. This made me want more and I noticed they were coming to Toronto, CA and I had the chance to go and perform a new song I had recorded live, wouldn’t you know it I placed 2nd in this competition and it was the first time performing live in 3 years! That is what led me on my journey to the championship finals which are held in Miami, FL and the rest is history, I love to come back here often to record and attend music events to expand my brand and meet new people. I’m coming back in November to complete the recording of my second studio album “Kym Possible” at the renowned BayEight Studios in North Beach, Miami. I am also attending a song pitch with Atlantic Records off of the upcoming album so with that I welcome any labels who would want to collaborate with me on this new project. It takes a lot of effort commitment and investment to do what I do, there have been times when I thought about giving up but then I remembered who was watching, and it was me watching my life go by without direct intent to succeed in my field of choice which is music, always have always will be,
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love to be inspiring to others in that you can have a dream and follow it regardless of race, age, or gender.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I would love to permanently move to the States and obtain my O visa as well as complete more studio albums with hopes of going on a world tour one day.
