We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isabella Brinkworth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Isabella, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have been singing and writing songs ever since I could talk! It started as a child when I would make personalized ringtones for all my family members. I would write on every school “get to know me” card that I wanted to be a singer, and I would get up on every stage possible to sing my heart out! Although it came naturally at first as I got older I started to really notice the eyes on me. I started to notice people looking at their friends when I was on stage and making little remarks. If I could go back and start again I would tell myself and any other aspiring artist that you can never impress everyone. Everyone has to do “embarrassing” things or you will never grow to be good!
I am a musician from Adelaide, one of the smaller cities located in Australia. I’m sure other creatives would know, that coming from somewhere where the music scene isn’t as big can sometimes feel disheartening. Although some cities might not have as many like-minded people, talented, amazing people are located anywhere in the world! The most important thing is to build connections with other artists and grow your community! There are a million people in the same situation, it helps so much to learn other’s stories and mutually support each other!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Bella, a nineteen-year-old singer/songwriter from Australia. I perform under the stage name Bella B and can be found as Bellab_music on most social media platforms! I have always sung and written songs but started to take my artistic journey more seriously at the age of seventeen when I was approached by a local producer Chris Low, who has acted as my music mentor.
I have experimented with different genres, but my next body of work will be much more stripped down. I want to make music that is authentic and leaves people feeling different after listening. With my main inspirations being Adele, Phoebe Bridgers, Yebba, and Lana del Rey, the music I am currently working on is a more lyric-focused approach. I’ve had many personal stories involving myself, my childhood, and my loved ones that I think many can relate deeply to, and am so excited to share! If you would like to check it out be sure to follow my Instagram Bellab_music! I will be releasing many songs in the new year!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I make a lot of songs about situations that are quite serious from my past. The best thing by far is seeing the reactions of people, who have felt that same way but have never been able to put it into words. Knowing that I am not alone and realizing so many people you would never expect have gone through so much and become so resilient. I think our job as creatives is to make people feel something. By being vulnerable and telling your own story, it impacts people you would never expect.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best thing I ever did to start building an audience is to get out there and play as much as possible! I play at every pub, bar, and event I can! One day my dream is to be on stage singing my own songs, but it’s hard to build an audience to do that unless you are out there actively trying to build one! Getting in touch with other artists is also super important so you can support each other’s work!
