Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Messica. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning to become a music producer/DJ can be a very difficult task with no set path to success. It’s a very long and intimidating process that requires constant learning and improvement since music is always evolving. There is also a big difference in learning to DJ vs. learning to make music and become a music producer. DJing in my opinion is much simpler to learn and can be a lot more fun and not quite so intimidating (minus the occasional stage fright). Music production on the other hand is never fully mastered in my opinion due to how complex it can be, but even understanding the fundamentals can take a very long time and a lot of determination and passion. Through other artists, mentors, and self-teaching myself via whatever resources I am able to find/afford I have begun to really hone in on my craft and create the sounds/music that I want to be making! If there was anything I could change in my journey I would choose to start it way before I did, I think that the mind is very moldable at certain ages and can grasp onto things very quickly, so if you’re at all passionate about any craft my advice is to start as soon as you can and jump right into it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The SKVLEZ project is centered around my biggest passion which is music and art. I’ve always been extremely driven and passionate when it comes to music as far back as I can remember. I was super into all sorts of music as a kid and would love discovering new sounds that made me feel new feelings and make impacts on me. I switched from a fan to a student in middle school when I was given the opportunity to play saxophone for my high school band. I was in love with the sax, but unfortunately only played for 1 year in 6th grade. The next few years I wasn’t playing instruments or getting into music production yet, but instead I had started going to concerts and festivals during my free time and really discovering some insane innovative new sounds that were changing the world along with providing me with some of the best experiences I have had up to date. I would fantasize about making music like some of my favorite musicians. Then at 18-19 yrs old after I graduated I decided to quit fantasizing and start doing. My close friend knew a bit about music production and I asked him to help me get started. He then cracked some software on my PC gave me a few lessons and that was the start of it all! Now I am playing some of the biggest electronic/bass shows in the Texas area and even starting to play massive events all over the country and I get to hear my own music rattle dance floors everywhere! It’s still the beginning of the project and the vision is very large, be on the lookout for SKVLEZ!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There are a couple main objectives with the project:
1. I want to make the exact sounds I have in my head and want to help innovate music for the better.
2. I love inspiring others and bringing anyone entertainment, joy, or help ease their lives even slightly if possible.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think when everything comes together and you get to see the impact that your art makes it really feels good. Whether it’s a small scale with little shows or individual people or on a larger scale with labels, festivals, releases, etc…
