We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Brecht a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission to provide a safe haven for farm animals was born from a deeply rooted belief that change is not only possible but necessary in this world and farm animals deserve so much more. It was conceived in the crucible of adversity, nurtured by compassion, and shaped by a profound desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those who need it most, and the health of the planet and human kind.
It all began with a small group of individuals who, each in their own way, had witnessed the injustices and hardships that many animals especially farmed animals face daily. We recognized that we could not stand idly by, that we had a moral obligation to act.
The catalyst for our mission came from a series of experiences around animal welfare and how different farm animals are treated in comparison to pets. We saw animals without access to food and water, or medical care, and even babies dying without anyone caring. These were not isolated incidents; they were symptoms of systemic issues that demanded our attention.
Our journey was not without challenges. It required relentless determination, countless hours out in the elements, and the unwavering support of like-minded individuals who shared our passion for change. We knew that it was an uphill battle, but we were willing to take on the fight.
As our mission took shape, we began to forge partnerships with organizations, experts, and activists who shared our commitment to creating a brighter future for farm animals, the planet and our health.
Today, our mission stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the belief that positive change is achievable when we work together with purpose and passion. We are driven by the stories of the lives we’ve saved, the hearts we’ve touched, and the hope we’ve kindled in the hearts of those who have benefited from our efforts.
Our journey is far from over, for the challenges of our world persist. But with each step we take, with each life we safe and each heart we touch, we are reminded of the profound impact we can have when we unite for a common cause.
Our mission is not just a story; it is an ongoing journey toward a better future for farm animals, and we invite you to join us in shaping that future for generations to come. Together, we can make a difference.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there,
my name is Nicole Brecht and I am the executive Director and Founder of the Good Life Refuge.
My life is deeply intertwined with an unwavering passion for animals. As the founder and Executive Director of Good Life Refuge, a farm animal sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe haven for farm animals in need, I have dedicated my life to making a difference in the lives of farm animals..
Born with a boundless love for all creatures great and small, my journey into animal advocacy was a natural progression. My role as a mother to two children only deepened the commitment to creating a world where animals are treated with kindness and compassion.
In addition to my role as a sanctuary leader and mother, I am a seasoned marketing professional. My skills in the world of marketing have not only been an asset to my career but have also proven invaluable in advancing the mission of Good Life Refuge. My ability to communicate the sanctuary’s message effectively has brought awareness and support to the cause, touching the lives of countless individuals.
My dedication to the welfare of farm animals extends beyond the sanctuary work and professional life. I am also a trained Veterinary Technician assistant, adding a layer of expertise and understanding to my advocacy efforts. My knowledge in this field enhances the ability to care for and protect the animals I love so dearly.
As an individual whose heart is firmly connected to the animal kingdom, my life serves as an inspiring example of how one person’s passion can transform into a life’s work.
Through my roles as a mother, marketing professional, and sanctuary founder, I continue to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, leaving a lasting impact on both the animal world and the hearts of those who know my story.
My dedication is a testament to the enduring power of love, compassion, and the belief that every life, regardless of its species, deserves a good life.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sanctuary, our operations depend entirely on the generosity and support of our community. After two years of dedicated work, we were beginning to gain momentum, notably increasing our participation in events. These events constituted our primary source of income.
However, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a sudden and unforeseen challenge. With on-site events no longer feasible, our sole source of income was abruptly halted. Undaunted, we pivoted and diligently sought innovative solutions to navigate these trying times.
We initiated a transition to virtual events, making it possible for school field trips, special sanctuary celebrations, virtual tours of our refuge, and even remote yoga sessions amidst the tranquility of our sanctuary grounds.
In this moment of uncertainty, we were profoundly fortunate to have the steadfast support of our dedicated community of supporters. Their unwavering commitment and generosity carried us through these difficult times, allowing us to emerge even stronger than before. Together, we not only weathered the storm but also discovered new ways to connect, share, and grow.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The nonprofit landscape is a unique realm, reliant on the goodwill of the public to fulfill our mission.
In the early days of Good Life Refuge, we embarked on this journey with our own capital, investing in the property, and providing for the needs and care of our beloved residents. It was a privilege we were fortunate to have.
However, as our refuge grew to house over 70 farm animal residents, with the monthly operational costs exceeding $10,000, the burden of financing became increasingly challenging to bear independently.
We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our generous community, whose contributions make this endeavor possible. Your compassion and generosity empower us to continue providing a loving sanctuary for these beautiful souls. Together, we stand as a testament to the incredible impact that collective kindness and shared responsibility can achieve.
