We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tulsi Chaturvedi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tulsi below.
Tulsi, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
First of all I am honored that I got this opportunity to be a part of your publication so I am Thankful for that with so much Gratitude… Second, Thank you for asking such a great question because we all know that God can’t be present everywhere so He made Parents. The importance of Parents stems from the fact that they are the ones who show genuine love. In many people’s success, the role of parents is the key. You can even notice many world leaders and philosophers describing the role of their parents in their life.
And on the same
“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back” – William D. Tammeus in Kansas City Star, 1978
Parents are like gardeners; they wish to deliver parenthood by optimizing their abilities, skills, love, and affection when raising a child. One can hardly miss the glint in a parent’s eyes as their little kid takes the first step or speaks the first word as it enters the world of civilization directed by the parent. And the most divine feeling of it all is getting to hear Mom or Dad.”
In life, a person can expect unconditional love from their parents, and that is the main takeaway from my childhood as my parents did everything in their power to provide great care for me by surrounding us with a bright aura and environment. They are the ones who had to help me overcome any negative attributes and the feeling of insufficiency. As in my case, there were a few times growing up, when I complained about my grades but their soothing words helped me in believing myself.
Since humans are social animals, love and care are essential elements of life so their unconditional traits of love, care, and protection got programmed in me; they taught me to pave a path that could be rocky but never too difficult to pass, they told me to never give up and never give in to my fears! Mummy and Papa both instilled a moral compass to be the main element of my character; I’m not saying I don’t make mistakes, but this compass keeps me walking on the cracks of morality that society has built.
First I applied it to myself and then to people around me including my Clients and these traits became essential to my virtue. Which also included the fact to share your happiness and sorrow equally and be a listening ear. And it turned me into an Empath.
I grew up in a liberal yet balanced environment, it was required of me to respect independence and individuality while never crossing a line that could stray me away from moral grounds and push me into arrogance.
They showed confidence in my decision making, trusted me irrespective of the outcomes; this way the lesson I learned was taught to me practically rather than theoretically. My parents gave me ginormous amounts of moral support to tackle a situation even when I felt I was failing. Today, I can hold my client’s hands and help them walk over their struggles or fear of being a failure.
I learned from my Papa that “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are…” & my Maa used to say: “I support you no matter what, I believe in you maybe sometimes more than you believe yourself. Just follow your heart that’s all that matters…” She was my best friend and a Mentor at the same time. My Papa was a big risk taker because he didn’t follow the norm. He did his Master’s in English but there was something that asked him to follow Music. So, he did his second Master’s degree in Music and got a Doctorate which brought music into my soul. He was passionate about music and I feel his passion in my bones. I learned music in my teens and now in my profession, I give Sound therapy which is nothing but his blessing… Every time I play instruments, He inspires me from Heaven and the sound reminds me of his presence & gifts that I inherited from him.
So me being a Spiritual soul truly comes from them that is my Maa & Papa; They taught me to show love and respect to all Religions, made me understand the power of praying with faith, and praying in unity as we all have our unique guiding light.
It’s quite interesting to mention that I was a late child; an unexpected fourth child who was raised like a single child. But their strong value system taught me to hold the family together as Family is an integral part of this journey of life. This took me some time to understand but as they “it is better late than never.”
My role models in my career and success are my Parents. They guided me in the right direction and made it easy to succeed. They even taught me the value of discipline and “survival of the fittest”.
I am nothing without my Parents…My Warriors, My Rocks…My parents were and will always be my lifelines. They consoled me when I was in sorrow, they inspired me whenever I was low in spirit and they are the ones who did not want anything in return. They loved me unconditionally. They are the Guides of mine in this and many more lifetimes hopefully and gave directions to me.
Life surprises us at times and we face some failures. So my Parents’ upbringing taught me to face when failures are encountered.
There are uncountable thoughts that are crowded in my mind to show the importance of parents in our life. But all I can say is that “Mummy & Papa this is for you, I know you are listening: I grew up cocooned in your Love, comforted by your words, and motived by your lives. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks for everything…”
Also, I truly feel that “My parents made us four sisters dream that we could become our best selves if we wanted to and if we put our souls into it” No matter how far we come, our parents are always in us…”
I would like to end this answer with this saying by Bob Keeshan: “Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement, and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well to describe me better it’s all about Fun with tons…of Peace in my own quiet time to rejuvenate and heal. I am a nature lover with a craving to understand the Mother Earth and its beauty and healing power…
I also truly believe that this saying that “you BEING uncomfortable, IS A SIGN OF Your Transformation…” is very organic. Approx. 6 years ago, I started my Studio- The Anubhuti with the intent of healing people through holistic, energy healing. But before The Anubhuti, I was happy in a successful corporate career. After completing my graduate degree in computer engineering, I worked for over a decade in Software development and my last stint was with a multi-national company as a Sr. Product Manager. And to be honest, I didn’t set out with the intention of becoming a Coach, Hypnotherapist, or a Healer. Although I always cared about a healthy lifestyle, healthy diet, cleansing, and alternative healing & wellness approach to successfully help people overcome various health challenges, even very serious ones like Asthma, diabetes, and cancer. My parents guided and persuaded me from age of 7 or 9 to incorporate Meditation, Praying to that Infinite Source, Mindfulness, and Yoga. During my college days, I developed a strong personal interest in spirituality, spiritual, holistic healing and I should say that later Reiki Healing discovered me. I fell in love with the power of energy, holistic healing & alternative healing. As a teenager, I observed my parents utilizing Homeopathy, natural healing physicians who used diet, and natural wellness approaches to heal their ailments. My interest was guided in particular towards mind-body healing and understanding that the root cause of disease in the physical body is not only addressed by western medicine but requires to be complemented with Alternative healing like Reiki, Meditation, Sound Therapy, etc.
It is often recognized that stress is perhaps the biggest contributor to all kinds of illness, but how does stress tangibly operate to compromise the functioning of our mind and body? I went through multiple physical dis-stress as a repercussion of the baggage I carried all along…But all these physical ailments were an outburst of the trauma I endured some knowingly and some unknowingly…
I began to study modalities such as Quantum Touch Healing through Reiki, Deep Emotional Release Bodywork as well as Meditation practices and working with Sound vibration as a therapy to balance the mind and human energy system. So as I was continuing with my career in Corporate, I told myself to start giving Reiki & Sound therapy sessions on weekends. Because, it’s undeniable that healing & helping others feeds my soul and gives me a sense of fulfillment, content & joy that no other thing in this 3D physical body can give. So, 6 years back, while driving back home I received this message from the Universe to plunge into full-time healing and grow further and that’s how ‘The Anubhuti’ came into existence.
Within a year itself starting The Anubhuti, I realized people need assistance in attaining healthier relationships and achieving their career and life goals. So I craved to increase my knowledge and pursued my graduation to become a Certified Profession Coach from iPEC. More I got involved in helping my coaching clients, I got an urge to understand the human behavior and the power of the Subconscious mind, this led me to learn Hypnosis, Neuro-linguistic programming, Emotional freedom techniques, and Time Techniques. Using these modalities, I helped clients quit addictions, lose unhealthy weight, and get over horrifying past traumas.
I had enlightening experiences with past-life regression and various forms of energy healing and spiritual guidance and wished to integrate these methods into my services offered at The Anubhuti Center. Most of the counseling agencies are very much limited by a conventional medicine model that often has patients see psychiatrists who rely on drugs rather than getting to the roots of a patient’s emotional distress and empowering them to heal. At The Anubhuti, I’m able to offer different modalities to heal our clients on a more mental, emotional, and physical level and empower them to heal….. We often say to children “hugs not drugs”, yet modern/western medicine sometimes neglects to support people in feeling loved, valued, and appreciated, instead of telling them that their body or mind is somehow defective and that they need a synthetic chemical compound with risky side effects to function in life. If we learn to understand symptoms and access a deeper part of a person’s consciousness and take into account the body, mind, and soul, we can promote genuine, lasting health and wholeness.
This holistic wellness approach has become the core of what I share with my clients. I work with individuals, couples, kids, and families to support health and enhance lives. With energy healing, I have even worked with animals/pets and plants.
I offer private healing and therapy sessions from my location and even distant i.e. across the globe including centers like Library, Senior living, Acupuncture Clinics, and Hospitals. I offer workshops for group healing and a complimentary session to my potential clients prior to an actual session so that I can understand their struggles, concerns and future goals. This thought to “Plant the seeds” to help the Community and Mother Earth as a whole came to me so I have taken the initiative during my recent visit to India and planning to cover where ever I can across the world.
I’m deeply grateful as I see how it transforms people’s lives. There is so much that is possible once we open ourselves up to those possibilities. And my mission, the goal is for people to be healthy, fulfilled, and content in their lives. Wisely said: “A harvest of peace is produced from a seed of Contentment”
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I would like to start this interesting question with this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1900: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall…” And this is what made me strong every time I have fallen irrespective of the situations and their contexts in my life…
When it comes to my journey I was in a dysfunctional or let us just say disoriented relationship. It came to a point where my soul craved basic human needs like self-respect, dignity, and practice principles that were en-grained by my parents. They had taught me to never compromise when it comes to my principles, to keep my head high even when I am in the darkest phase of life, and then to always fight back.
So in my situation, I got to a point where I had left my house with only a few dollars to my name. I stayed at a common friend’s house for a week but I realized that it wasn’t working as they wanted me to simply go and compromise on my existing relationship at the cost of my values, which left me in sheer confusion. As I accepted the path of my truth, I decided to move out before I compromise my dignity. The next step was truly the most challenging, moving into a shady hotel so I could save the money that I was left with. I chose to cut down on my resources; eating the bare minimum and compromising on my diet was the only solution left. It was at that very point I realized I was home-less because before this I slept in my car for days in a row.
I had thoughts to run away instead of facing my fear and struggles.
Most of us are familiar with the expression “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” It turns out that this might be partially true – not everyone possesses the ability to persevere trauma(S).
Indeed, while some people crumble in the face of adversity, others are somehow able to adapt successfully. Given its emphasis on human capacity, fulfillment, and healthy development; Positive Psychology is particularly invested in understanding the emotional quality that not only manages to shield some people from the impact of adversity — but truly enables them to thrive.
This protective emotional armor is called ‘RESILENCE’. And this resilience was a question in the relationship where I was mentally, emotionally, financially, or to an extent physically abused. I was left with only deeper level wounds and emotional scars. I was going through a lonely phase, depressed, anxious, with tons of fear, and self-doubt; the worse of it all was putting my self-worth and identity in question. Given this situation, I could have easily gone back to my loving friends or family in India or my Godmother in the States. But I chose to fight back and come back as a fighter.
With a career shift from Corporate to Relationship Coach or Hypno-Therapist, Empath I was able to fight back, and trust my capabilities and blessings as I had resiliency in me. And that’s why I did take risks and shifted my path 360 degrees.
But all these struggles didn’t make me come to a compromise at the cost of my principles. In those moments, I knew and remembered all the learnings that my Parents had taught me. So I survived and called Divine and my departed Mother to give me strength to survive and show myself the power of my soul’s Resiliency…
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
First, I think my exposure to art and culture over the years have built my foundation. While my father held roots tight to his love and respect for classical music on one side, and on the other he was a tough British era kid with love for Holland cheese…..point that I need to make here is the exposure that He created along with Maa was something that made me open to adaptability and understanding of different cultures and of course work and business cultures.
Second, even before I started The Anubhuti, I realized people need assistance in attaining healthier relationships and achieving their personal, emotional, social, spiritual, financial and career goals. I came to believe that becoming a Coach would be incredibly useful and it was then that I decided to go to a coaching school to become a Certified Professional Coach from iPEC. Coaching is about helping others gain clarity and focus on their lives irrespective of areas, addressing personal and professional challenges, and build a more fulfilling, well-rounded life. iPEC training program didn’t give us textbook knowledge, rather it’s not just learning it’s also about practicing what I have learnt. iPEC program helped me reach my goals as a coach by making me become an effective leader, motivational speaker. I was able to 1, 5 & 10 years roadmap for The Anubhuti Center, set goals, outline strategy. I also utilized the coaching tool kit in my personal life so to achieve personal development goals. I was empowered to work on my existing relationships whether friends, family, or even with my clients through learning this amazing tool call as ELI – Energy Leadership Index Assessment. I learnt from the coaching school, that I must become an effective leader in my own life before I can cultivate leadership qualities in my own coaching clients. I’m a huge fan of the Energy Leadership book by Bruce D Schneider, this book helped better understand myself, learnt 7 energy levels/centers, identifying my goals, roadblocks and unlocking key insights that empowered me to lead a happier more fulfilling life.
Along with the different tools and techniques, I learnt concrete and specific ways in which a Coach can promote resilience in their Clients:
Build Empathy, Identify a Go-To Person, Listen, Accept Clients or in general for Who They Are i.e. No Judgement, Identify Strengths, Do-Overs to make sure that your clients knows that mistakes along the way are okay and present them as learning experiences and areas where he/she can try to do better next time, Develop Accountability, Consistency, Commitment, Trust & Responsibility, Offer Meaningful Participation, Teach Problem-Solving though showing your client ways to deal with problems, providing both role modeling and encouragement.
At my practice, I have introduced the ELI Assessment & Debrief session, where my coaching or hypnosis clients take an assessment. This assessment gives insight to my client’s energy level index, from Level 1 to Level 7. Then through my coaching sessions, I collaborate with my clients to set goals and coach them the tools, and those my client can utilize in their lives to shift their energy level, so to remove the roadblocks and achieve their goals. I educate my clients the 7 energy levels, the advantage & disadvantage of each level and help them take the advantage of each level in different scenarios/situations. Coaching can help transition in life e.g. change in career or job, death of loved ones, improve relationship with themselves & others, improve their business or professional career.
I learnt in my Grad School which very well gels along with what John Popovich said: “As their coach, your job is to set the bar high, inspire them to reach this bar, encourage them, and most of all, guide them in the best possible manner and in the most supportive environment”
