We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Perry Foster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Perry, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Regular practice is the only way I have found to develop any craft. Whether I have been studying independently or in an institution, the true learning always comes from daily practice. Practices have looked very different for the the various modalities that I like to work with, but the ethic is the same. I have found it important to structure any practice with a healthy balance of personal whim and exploration with methods and routines, so as to keep rhythm with myself while continuing to explore the boundaries of what I can do with the material.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a lifelong musician – writing, performing, and recording across the country since childhood. I am an experimental filmmaker – video installations, dance cinema, large-scale public projections, landscape works.
I have a passion for civic space and have created public parks in Arizona and New York.
I am a death doula. I serve those at the end of life in their transition.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being an artist is a life-illuminating process. It is active and engaged. It calls me to explore my self and my surrounding. It enhances my being within this world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I seek mastery of my crafts, using them to create connections within people and places.
