Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mynthia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mynthia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I fell in love with music and singing at just four years old. Growing up in the church, I’ve always been fascinated by vocalists and the sounds the human body is able to produce. My fascination with vocal intricacies intensified when I heard singers in church doing melismas, dynamic changes and other kinds of vocal manipulation. I decided then that I would make it my mission to become a life student to the craft. I began singing solos of my own, the earliest dating back to 5 years old singing “Jesus Loves Me” and “Kumbaya, My Lord” for the congregation. I started my journey with show choirs in middle school, doing musicals as well helped with my stamina on stage. I started to study privately in a classical voice studio in high school. It was here I found the foundations of singing and the principles of classical technique. I am especially proud of my extensive classical background because it did not come easy to me, my two Immigrant Liberian parents were not just going to blindly support something, I had to fight.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Mynthia, a pop artist in New Orleans, Louisiana. I started writing my own music at around 11 or 12. I did not know how to play the piano to make beats so majority of the songs were written A Capella. I began recording in a studio at 15 and found my love for stacking vocal harmonies there. I find refuge in music and my goal as an artist is to make people feel the same calm and safety music fills me with. A large part of my identity as an artist is that I am aligned with my destiny and I’ve known for my whole life what people will know in due time.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Authenticity is the best way to build an audience, no amount of algorithm manipulation can replace true authentic content. People are attracted to ideas they can relate to, you find your audience by being yourself. Social Media can be your best friend and worst enemy all at the same time. While it’s great for promotion and putting yourself out there, it also opens the door for comparison and self judgement. I try to remember that there is a whole world out there with real people and real connections to be made.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn my warped concept of success. A 9 year old me wanted fame, cars, money, multiple houses and every award known to man by 13. I also had every detail of my entire life planned out for 50 years to come (LOL). I had to unlearn the idea that you can rush life or plan and expect everything to go your way. Life is a marathon not a sprint and everyone’s race is different. I had to unlearn comparison as it’s the antithesis of growth. I had to unlearn my internalized homophobia to be able to access the truest form of my artistry. I had unlearn people pleasing in order to make decisions for myself for the benefit of myself . Those have been the most liberating moments of my life so far.
