Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessie Spartano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jessie, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I just want to be clear, it’s not only about learning the craft, it’s about WANTING the craft. You need to want it so bad that you work at it everyday. Ignore the noise. Ignore those who are before you. Ignore those who are behind you. Practice every single day, even if you don’t want to. Do cardio to keep your heart fresh. Do vocal warmups everyday to keep your vocals on point. Get up early and go to bed late. If you aren’t willing to give up a social life to chase your craft, you don’t want it bad enough.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been a performer my whole life but music really hit me in high school. I dreamed about making my own music every night while listening to my favorite artists. The fact that I actually made this dream come true is beyond me. I made music either in my closet or when my friend let me go to his studio for years before signing with my producer 3 years ago. I’m dedicated to my craft and I’m honored to have been chosen by God to do what I do.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Please support your friends!! It’s so stressful to have to sell a minimum amount of tickets and beg my friends to come to my shows. It is my number one reason for not wanting to perform live but I still do it because no one cares about my success as much as I do and I love performing live. I don’t let my ticket sales keep me from showing up. For other artists out there, sell as many tickets as you can and do not look at the final numbers. Show up and kill that stage! Also, do not buy merchandise from sellers outside of venues. The money they make does not go to the artist. In fact, they have nothing to do with artist sales because they sell knock off items they had printed themselves for themselves. Please buy merchandise while you are in the arena/stadium and directly support your favorite artists.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ll never forget the moment I quit acting to pursue music full time. Let’s go back in time. I was on set filming a movie when the director and I got to chatting about music. He found out I wrote rap music and I found out he recorded and performed rap music when he wasn’t making films. He invited me to the recording studio and the moment I put on those headphones everything made perfect sense to me. I understood in that moment why I wrote music, why I studied music at USC and why I surrounded myself with posters of musicians and sold out venues all over my bedroom walls. It was because acting led me to music and there was no turning back. I found my calling and no one or nothing can stop me now.
