Allison, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The risk I have taken would be pursing my dreams of working in the beauty industry. I graduated college in 2014 with my Bachelor’s of Science in Human Health. I worked in the medical field for about 3 years and soon realized my heart just wasn’t in it. My passion was being a Makeup Artist. I gave up working a full time job to working contract work in the beauty industry. I knew this was the only way to network with like minded creatives, build my clientele and get my talent noticed. I branded Makeup By Ms. Cursey in 2021 and I am now the Houston Regional Makeup Artist for COTY.
Allison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Freelance Makeup Artist in Houston, TX as well as surrounding areas. I have had a passion for Cosmetics since I was a little girl. I grew up watching my hardworking mother grow in the beauty industry. She is the inspiration for my self taught craft today! I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in 2014 in Lake Charles, LA. I then moved to Texas in June of 2015 in search of growth and bigger career opportunities. After working in the medical field for 3 years I realized that beauty was where my heart truly resided. I took a leap of faith and began working in the beauty industry. I knew this was the only way to network with other individuals that shared the same passion as me and to get my craft noticed. I began branding Makeup By Ms. Cursey in 2018 and made it official in 2021. I live in a city where the competition for make artists is extremely high. However, my style of artistry, skill set, and beauty experience that I provide to my clients is what sets me apart from the rest.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

I would say some of key milestones would be to continue to push through and stay consistent with your craft no matter what. Find ways to stay active or working in the industry you are in. Always network and promote your brand/business every chance you get!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The best way to fund your business would be through grants. I learned the hard way by jump starting with business with my savings and/or personal funds. I would also say look into business loans.
