We recently connected with Los Calladitos and have shared our conversation below.
Los Calladitos, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We are urban artists and muralists, Jorge and I Ari started our project 9 years ago. Since then we have developed a universe with several characters that we have painted in different parts of the world such as Estonia, Spain, France, Germany, Chicago, California, Colombia and different states of Mexico. We are currently developing an animated television series and we will soon be presenting it in Argentina.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After working for more than 6 years in advertising in Mexico City we both decided that it was not the creative path we wanted and we went to live on the beach, there we began painting murals at small art festivals. After a few months we went to live in San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato, a place full of art and culture where we decided to build our Workshop/Studio. This was where we combined our strengths and the artistic duo Calladitos (little quiet people) was born. We started painting murals in several states of Mexico and that’s when Nueve Arte Urbano (agency for muralist) saw our art work and called to paint in our first international urban art festival in Estonia, that’s the first time that our art became international. After that we spent the next 6 years traveling, painting murals, and exhibiting in different parts of the world such as Spain, France, Germany, the USA. among others. During the pandemic we dedicated ourselves to doing artistic residencies to encourage other urban artists and this is also when we began to write the stories of the characters that were repeated over and over again in our murals, digital illustrations, drawings and paintings. During the last year we have had two solo exhibitions in Barcelona Spain at Montana Gallery and at ArtByFriends in Annecy France. Meanwhile we have been developing an animated series with which we are competing at Pixelatl, an animation festival in Mexico and where we were winners of the Ventana Sur award, which gives us the opportunity to present our series in Argentina.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We believe that work is worth a thousand words, that is what our name of Calladitos means, two people who did not speak much but who express themselves with their art and I think that is the most important thing, allowing us as artists to express ourselves through what we do, connecting with others through our paintings is the most important thing for us. I think that we have been very patient people on this artistic journey and that the construction of our characters and the universe that we have created has been thanks to this, to understanding each other and having an introspective journey to get to know ourselves through our work.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I believe that our mission is to share the universe that we have built with more people, through other means, not only painting and large-format murals, but also through animation and illustrated books where we can tell more complete stories.
