Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Yeskel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Lately, I’ve enjoyed painting LA ‘s historic restaurants and landmarks. The city is always changing so it’s necessary for me to remind myself and others the beauty and importance of our treasured establishments. I started painting closed restaurants during the pandemic and now I try to paint relevant and important businesses that are fighting to stay open and preserved.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I just celebrated my 20th year in L.A. I had a hard time wrapping my head around its vastness when I first got here. but it didn’t take long to get inspired. I love that everyday can be a new discovery that I can paint. The light and the flat horizon are constant reminders of the glaring romance, nostalgia and often flawed city that LA has become. I like to paint all of it as a memory of mixed emotions.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love to teach painting and have been fortunate to do in LA since 2010. I often hear from my students that they are finally ‘learning how to see’. That can mean a lot of things- literal ideas of color harmony and values, but also learning how to slow down and appreciate one’s surroundings. It’s important as an artist to be sensitive to your surroundings. That sensitivity has allowed me to express my subtle observations of life which can often be over looked.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to create everyday which can be tiresome but ultimately worth it. I feel everyone has a role in society and that all jobs and duties are important. For me, getting the opportunity to make something everyday gives my life meaning and purpose.
