We recently connected with Jamie Roth and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I started Rose & Wild with the intent to create personalized pieces specifically tailored to each individual client. I take pride in sharing my creativity to produce one-of-a-kind jackets that are not only meaningful, but fun to wear for years to come. Some of my favorite and most meaningful projects I’ve done include:
– a flannel for the wife a football player to wear to the Super Bowl…which shortly after turned into commemorative keepsake to memorialize winning the championship
– a jacket for a woman who lost her father- we took scraps of his clothing (shirts, jerseys, etc…) and made a collage of beautiful memories that she can wear and keep close to her forever
-countless jackets adorned with names, jersey numbers & team colors worn by athlete’s loved ones (from t-ball all the way to the pros)
…These are just a few significant mentions, but every piece I create has it’s own story and purpose to not only the client but myself as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jamie and I am the founder/owner of Rose & Wild. I am a wife and a mom to 3 children. (Gavin-11, Presley Rose-9, & Violet-6).
3 years ago right before the pandemic hit, I was knee-deep in baseball mom duties for my son’s little league team. I was looking online for something fun to wear to his games-but all my searching came up short. I just couldn’t find anything that seemed meaningful AND trendy! I’ve always loved fashion and had a creative side…and unbeknownst to me at the time…I also had a deep desire for a creative outlet where I could curate personal pieces that are not only on-trend, but help tell a story as well.
With all the ideas flowing I decided to make a denim jacket. It was my first ever masterpiece. It had my son’s team name, some scraps from a t-shirt, a sequined logo, and some rhinestone stars. All stitched by hand. It was a little messy, but I was proud! I shared a picture on my social media and before I knew it friends and family were sending me order requests.
I worked tirelessly for weeks creating jackets…trying new ideas, teaching myself to sew, and learning painting and drawing techniques from YouTube. What started out as a random idea quickly turned into an inadvertent business concept. Before I knew it, I was starting a full-fledged business where I took custom orders with nothing but some denim, paint and a side-table-turned-workbench in my husband’s home office.
I quickly realized I needed a name. It couldn’t be something bland and uninspired like “Jamie’s Jean Jackets”…it had to be meaningful and open-ended…in case I wanted to add something other than denim jackets :)
I also knew I wanted it to represent my kids (they are, after all, my entire inspiration for this). Since the idea originated from wanting to represent my son’s endeavors, I wanted to make sure my girls were equally portrayed. After much thought, we landed on “Rose & Wild”- ‘Rose’ coming from the middle name my oldest daughter and I share, and ‘Wild’- which perfectly characterizes my youngest daughter…she lives her life as the most wild and free little girl I’ve ever known!
Rose & Wild is so incredibly important to me. I LOVE that I am able to produce one-of-a-kind jackets that are meaningful, sentimental & fun to wear.
What sets me apart from similar creators is that I make every single patch by hand. I typically don’t use vinyl or screen printing…or anything else of the sort. Even though this is exceptionally time consuming and tedious- its important that every client gets exactly what they envisioned- which I feel can only be done by hand. I want every person to see their jacket and be able to *feel* the love that went into it. After all, every brush stroke and stitch is placed with intention. I am SO proud of that! I also let every client know that there is a lifetime guarantee for their jacket. These are meant to be worn and loved…so if a stitch needs to be replaced, or some glitter needs to be re applied- no problem! Nothing brings me greater joy than to know a piece has been worn and enjoyed.
Aside from being proud of the quality of work I produce, I am quite proud that I have been able to build this little business from nothing. Seriously! I don’t even have a website…I solely share my work on instagram. Every follower and every order got there organically. Are there bigger businesses with many more followers? Of course! But it doesn’t take away from what I built and what I continue to build.
I want everyone to know that I am immensely grateful for the support and encouragement! Sometimes we have visions of success that never pan out. As small of a “success” this is, I am proud of it with every fiber of my being. I’m proud of my sweet neighbor & friend, Nancy, for agreeing to help me with all of the sewing! I am SO grateful that God has blessed me with a creative ability that I am able to share with others. I love that my kids have seen me build this from the ground up…they will forever know that they can do ANYTHING…if a stay-at-home-mom of 3 can start and build a business while a global pandemic ran rampant, they can truly do ANYTHING!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I will speak to this as Instagram is my only means of advertising. I started my instagram page (@roseandwild_jamie) shortly after naming my business. Let me be clear that I am in NO way a social media expert (I mean helloooo I don’t even have more than 4,000 followers at the moment!) But I DO know that my goal was to be genuine and organic from the start. I share my work. I share some of my life. I share random things and I share well thought out posts. Every follower I have is there because they like my work…and maybe get a kick out of the occasional meme or reel I post.
If anyone that is just starting out and wanted advice, I would tell them to just be consistent. Post your work. Post your process. Post you. Even when nobody is commenting or engaging-post anyways. The engagement WILL come!
If I had a dollar for everytime I felt like nobody was seeing what I put out there, I’d be a millionaire, haha! Just be you!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Well I think being a creative, in general, is all about resilience! Not everyone is going to like you or your work…and you truly have to be OK with that. “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” -Dita Von Teese. I have had to eat a lot of humble pie. I’ve had projects that I have worked on for days on end, only to show the client the finished product and they pick it apart piece by piece. I’ve had to start over on SO many jackets. I have had someone tell me that the painted portrait on a jacket looked NOTHING like the actual person it was meant to be! (Thank goodness for my husband who is always there to lift me up and tell me I did a great job and that I can’t please everyone!) It’s just a part of the deal. It doesn’t mean its easy…it just means its figureoutable! (that’s my favorite phrase- “everything is figureoutable!)
