We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Lorraine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
With any creative job (photographer, designer, etc) I think people on the corporate side forget we need to still be creative, even if we are trying to sell a product or reach a quota. I’ve worked with a few different companies that controlled every aspect of a photoshoot, down to the very angle I needed to shoot. Made me feel like all I was there to do was “push a button.” This is what I think they get wrong. They do not let the creatives have a voice in the creative aspects of the job. I always feel like we were hired because of our creative minds and what we can bring to the table.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was in the 6th grade, my dad got me my first camera. It was a little point and shoot 35 mm film camera. Nothing fancy. We took a trip to the Grand Canyon, and that’s where my love of photography started. Once I got into high school I started to take photography seriously. Grew up and went to college to get my BA in digital photography and started working every photo job you can think of. Everything from working in a mall portrait studio, a traffic camera company, and even at the zoo as one of those photographers at the gate trying to take your photo. Throughout all those random jobs, I was shooting as much as I could on the side. I was photographing weddings, families, model test shoots, all of it. During that time I was discovering my style and what I truly loved to shoot. I fell in love with fashion, editorial, and model photography. Now I am a full time freelance photographer shooting for different fashion/e-comm brands as well as shooting models anytime they need a portfolio update. One of the things I am most proud of is my stubbornness, or my ambition – as one of my friends likes to remind me. Getting started was not easy, but my ambition kept (and keeps) me going. I will also (almost) always figure out how to make a photo concept come to life. No matter what tools I have available to me.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My sparkling personality! Really though, I’ve always had this knack for making anyone in front of my camera feel comfortable and confident. If I need to be silly/goofy to get you to laugh, I’ll do it. If I need to be your biggest cheerleader, I got you. I make it so even the most seasoned models feel like they can take on any challenge this shoot might bring! The more comfortable the set is, the better the photos will come out. I’ve been told by a few different clients that they heard how I was behind the camera and just had to see for themselves. That to me, is the best compliment.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing the impact my images create. Whether it be the smiles on the client’s faces, or the revenue the images bring to the company I shot for, there is always an impact. The return on my investment, so to speak, is seeing what results I can get from any shoot I do.
