We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Priya Kakati a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Priya, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Way to achieve success is different for many and the meaning of success can vary person to person.
To me being successful is being able to lead a balanced life physically and mentally while you’re setting future goals. To be successful is to always be curious and never be stagnant, to be able to trust that you can achieve the goal you’ve set despite the hardships and acknowledging the failure and to understand it so you can work towards it.
Being successful doesn’t have to be defined by fame and glory; it can be you going through a day, a week by giving it your best and always pushing to be better and also by being able to help others achieve their goals.

Priya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an Illustrator and Visual Development Artist currently based in LA from India.
I moved to San Francisco in the fall of 2015 to pursue my Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University. Through my college I found my new found interest beyond just design, but also love for storytelling.
Soon after graduation in the year 2020 I worked on a short film as a visual development artist to bring by friends story to life with the help of a team of artists that has now been awarded as “Best Animated Short Film” at Hollywood Shorts Fest. I’ve also worked with Primal Screen as a concept/background artist with one of their clients to design worlds for an AI learning app to help teach students have easier time with learning. I’ve also had other recent clients whom I’ve helped develop their ideas from concept to final stages as both an Art Director and a Visual Development Artist and have enjoyed every single one of them.
I’m always have to offer my artistic service whether it be in a form of designing a film, an app a show or even as a mentor to some who want to break into the idustry.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media has a had a huge impact in jumpstarting my career and advertise my work in the platform.
First building your brand and also participating in advertising your work with hashtags that help to showcase your portfolio can lead to job opportunities and broaden your social media presence by drawing in a community that would follow your work.
As an artist I started posting a lot of my work as often as I could for people to discover me and participated in challenges set within the art community and would showcase my work under specific trending hashtags and thats how I had my first breakthrough in the industry! And also remember! In order to gain support you should show support towards other artists.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to have the freedom to express myself, to create something beautiful for the eyes and bring ideas to life and also making a difference!
I love that there’s never just a single way to approach an idea. Instead with every idea there’s a new challenge that can lead to new discoveries whether its the process of something that you’re creating for yourself or for client. I truly feel I’m constantly learning and growing with every project I take upon.
