Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Risa Vinegar-Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Risa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
One day a friend and I were chatting about starting a nail salon business together. I ended up in a program at a barbering and cosmetology academy, became a cosmologist and opened a hair salon on my own. I was born with a natural gift and talent for working with hair. My California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology license along with an AA in Business Administration was enough to help me transition easily from idea to execution. I was off and running.
Before I began my journey into entrepreneurship in the hair care industry, my first job was at a bank and that is where I started cutting hair in the ladies’ room. Initially, I did not have a clear direction or vision for my future, what I wanted it to look like or what I would be doing. A deeper dive into the hair care industry eventually led to landing entry-level work as a hair stylist in a succession of small local Los Angeles boutique salons.
Once I discovered that entrepreneurship was in my DNA, the hair care industry became a very natural and easy career choice for me. My natural talent for transforming damaged hair miraculously into healthy hair with body, bounce and shine also began to reveal itself. I began to attract a following of clients from friends, family and by referral.
My early mentors noticed my unique gift, skillset, and potential in my work. They began to give me clients which allowed me to imagine a bigger picture and have a bigger vision for my business and my life. Finding clarity and knowing my why for working in my profession has made it pretty much smooth sailing. Any little inconveniences, unexpected problems, or bumps in the road during my professional growth and development have always worked out to be beneficial and positive experiences that kept moving me forward in carving out a career path for myself in the hair care industry.
My reputation started to rise steadily and quickly. I was either very lucky and/or at the right place at the right time when three of my former employers transitioned out of the hair care industry and turned over their long-time clients to me.
I took a giant leap of faith and opened my first startup hair salon, THE HAIR DESIGN, followed by a transition into a new start up, NOUVEAU RICHE. I then transitioned into a joint venture as JOHNSON AND GUESS where services expanded to include an esthetician, manicurists, additional stylists, and I was able to hire my first hair care assistants.
The time came for yet another major shift in my career path along with a reinvention of my brand, services, and products. I closed the Johnson and Guess Salon. I settled into a temporary location that turned out to be just the healing and nurturing space I needed for reflection and renewal to create a new vision for my future. I was in a perfect incubator for new ideas and a newfound freedom to develop more cutting-edge, organic hair care systems and solutions.
I leveled up my education and knowledge of organic hair care with scientific-based research to create more effective natural and chemical-free hair care formulas for my clients. With the change in environment, my creativity went through the roof. The law of attraction kicked in with resources to implement a new brand image for my salon services and products. I began to be known as the “Mad Hair Scientist” and opened THE LOUNGE ON WILSHIRE in the Mid-Wilshire district where I’ve been for the past thirteen years.
Fifteen years ago, I was ahead of my time with an innovative and visionary thought that caused me to take another giant leap of faith. I began the process of transitioning all my clients out of relaxers and chemicals and into 100% organic natural hair care. It was a huge risk with a huge reward and my clients are grateful and thankful to this day.
As my client base continued to increase over the years, so did their needs, demands and expectations. Based on my intuitive ability to solve hair issues that no one else was able to solve for my growing clientele, I knew I had chosen the right career path for myself that was in alignment with my gifts and talents. The more I learn about my craft the more excited I become to advance and evolve the skills and knowledge that have brought me to where I am today. I have developed an amazing product line that is exclusive to my salon. I am more passionate and enthusiastic now about my work than I was when I opened my first salon. I’m looking forward to what the future holds moving forward.
Working in the hair care industry is what I was born to do. I am a problem solver and there are plenty of problems to solve around hair loss and scalp health. I am passionate about continuing to maintain and sustain my reputation of being the solution to those problems. I am entertaining some exciting and innovative ways to expand my business and services via “mobile distribution” to make our hair smoothies and organic products available to my hair care industry colleagues. I’m also excited about a vision to open a scalp treatment center. So many hair issues originate in the scalp, and without a healthy scalp there is no healthy hair growth. I’m on a mission to raise the bar by creating new result oriented organic treatments and products to diminish this issue.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a native of Los Angeles, California. I am a HAIR CARE FANATIC, founder and owner of The Lounge On Wilshire, Hair Sciences Wellness and Styling Salon. What sets me and my salon apart from others is that my niche is natural hair health without the use of chemicals or relaxers.
We use all organic products that I personally research, create and customize to match the needs of each client. Our proprietary hair follicle and scalp rejuvenation treatments are made for women and men, all nationalities, and all textures of hair. My products are innovative and revolutionary. My clients experience amazing results.
I don’t do this work alone. I’m blessed to have two phenomenal dedicated, long-time assistants/hair care technicians, Inosenica (Lupe) Gomez and Gloria Carrillo who make the magic happen. Their years of exceptional knowledge of hair health and wellness combined with their expert competency in the application and processing of customized treatments and hair smoothies is priceless. Together we create our trademark “SIGNATURE HAIR.” Rosalind Morris is a salon hair wellness technician and stylist here at the Lounge. She is also my ride or die and has been with me for the past 30 years. Angela Hoffman holds down the fort as Salon Manager and wears a multitude of organizational hats. Her detailed administrative support is key to our ebb and flow. She oversees coordination of the front desk, client scheduling and the complex day-to-day salon operations and logistics which involves many clients, goods, and services. Her dedication to the brand, the clients, and her commitment to the long challenging hours is what keeps the salon organized and functioning at optimum efficiency so we can meet our daily bottom line.
I’ve been called a Hair Guru, The Hair Doctor, Doctor Risa, a Hair Scientist, and a Chemist extraordinaire!!! But I’m good with just RISA!!! I have mastered my craft and after 40 years in the hair care industry, I still love the work that I do. I have been voted as one of LA’S TOP 10 BEAUTY EXPERTS in the city by my peers. I’m most proud of the reputation and respect that I have developed over the years by my peers and the public. My mission is to make life better for my clients and I succeed in doing that by being the solution to their hair care problems.
Looking back over the years, once I began to get clients, I instinctively knew this career path would work for me. I believed in myself and was not afraid to take a risk on following my heart and the vision I saw for my future. Investing in myself and my God-given gifts and talents, paid off. Transforming the lives of my clients with my services turned into a passion that keeps me fulfilled personally, professionally, and financially.
I’m also proud of my own growth and development over the years and my capacity to consistently evolve and deliver tangible results that resolve my clients’ hair loss problems with amazing hair growth. I have earned the trust of my clients. My reputation has been built on the quality of my work and through word of mouth. People come to me sometimes as their last hope!
The Lounge On Wilshire specializes exclusively in natural hair care services. New clients receive a hair consultation on the day of their appointment. We do not use perm products, weave, or braid hair. We do not blow dry hair. Instead, we roller set and style your hair. We use all natural products to enhance healthy hair growth and scalp health. We offer hair smoothies, scalp treatments, oxygen, hair steaming and color. We also offer treatment only services!
I discovered very early in this industry that hair is everything and hair loss has a huge devasting psychological effect on both men and women. It has been rewarding and fulfilling to be able to turn that mental and emotional trauma around. I create my products in-house with fruits, vegetables, enzymes, amino acids, and other natural ingredients. Treatments are created to address the unique needs of each client. We are living in a world where a significant amount of hair loss from traction alopecia and damage to hair line edges is being caused by lace front wigs, braids, and weaves. My unique products, treatments and services have had a positive effect on these specific areas of hair loss including hair loss from hormonal imbalance.
What I would like potential clients/followers/fans to know about me is that it is my hard work and research that I put into my business, 24/7/365 and the quality of my products and services that have boosted my reputation and the confidence of my clients that I am the solution to their hair and scalp issues. My clients regain their confidence and self-esteem when their hair has grown back. What is most fulfilling for me is seeing the smiles back on the faces of my clients from their transformations. My clients find me after they have been told hair growth is impossible. At the Lounge On Wilshire, they experience what’s possible.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What I believe has helped me build my reputation within my market is that I have been able to establish a unique niche for myself where I specialize in products and services that allow me to fulfill what most clients request, healthy, natural, beautiful, easy to care for hair! We do not blow dry hair at the Lounge. All products are organic, and we use no chemicals whatsoever.
To this point my reputation has been my bestseller for new clients. My mastery of my craft speaks for itself! I grow hair back when doctors tell clients their hair will never grow back. I have established myself as the Go-To Hair Loss, Hair Wellness and Scalp rejuvenation Specialist. My work is known and recognized outside of my salon as SIGNATURE HAIR BY RISA!
I’m grateful to be able to solve my clients’ hair problems. I’m humbled by the fact that after 40 years in the hair care industry I have long-time clients that are still trusting, supportive and loyal to me and my brand. Having the intuitive capacity to transform, reinvent and elevate my salon services and quality of work to levels that continue to meet my clients’ demands year after year is what continues to expand my reputation.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think what best demonstrates my resilience is the fact that I have been in the hair care industry for 40 years, still have a large following and have stayed innovative, creative, and knowledgeable at my craft which has helped me survive and thrive as a service provider who is well respected in my field of work.
I listen to my clients. I have the emotional intelligence to recognize and understand the frustrations of my clients when it comes to their hair concerns and needs. I build strong relationships and bonds with my clients and use my intellect, experience, wisdom, and creativity to solve their hair and scalp problems. Being a visionary keeps me resilient, flexible, and open to change. My goal is always to nurture positive outcomes and results for my clients. My resilience and success are due to my consistency over the years to maintain quality work. I love creating new innovative products that work and enjoy providing salon services that deliver results and transform the lives of my clients.
