We were lucky to catch up with Lottie Hulme recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lottie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think the most important thing is having a passion for what you do. When you genuinely love and enjoy what you do, you can’t go far wrong. As my dad always said to me, pick something you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life. If you’re in a career that you genuinely want to progress in then success should come naturally, with hard work!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Senior Showbiz Journalist for The Sun, and my role is all about celeb culture, entertainment and TV. Essentially, I live and breathe all things celeb. I didn’t initially start out as a showbiz journalist. I did a Masters in journalism and there are so many different avenues you can go down with a career in journalism so I was excited to see which opportunities presented themselves. I started in fashion and lifestyle journalism for a magazine in Scotland while I did my Masters. This is where I started interviewing people for the first time – I loved it. After this, I switched it up completely and went into luxury travel and food journalism in London – something I still do and have a big passion for. I was Deputy Editor here. Then one day I was approached by someone in the showbiz industry about a job role and it really excited me. Et voila, my career in showbiz journalism began! I worked for OK! Magazine and then moved over to The Sun. It’s a brilliant role and it certainly keeps me on my toes. Showbiz never sleeps, after all…
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience is the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties and, like any career, journalism certainly comes with its difficulties. It’s very important to be resilient in this career as your articles and interviews have a huge reach so, unfortunately, sometimes the things you write or say are subject to backlash. I’ve definitely had my fair share of negative comments and trolling over the years – from celebs to readers – but as long as I am confident in the work I’ve produced and put out to the world, then I really don’t let it get to me. You might also get times when celebrities don’t want to talk about something or answer your questions. Again this is so normal in my career. I’ve had to build a thicker skin and my resilience certainly didn’t come over night, but it’s a journey!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’ve always been an advocate for using social media to promote my articles, interviews or videos. I’ll almost always publish my writing on Instagram or share them on X, or Threads. I also have a showbiz TikTok account with over 50k followers. I think it’s important to establish yourself as a voice in journalism, and to get conversation going surrounding the work you publish. I’ve connected with a huge amount of agents, PRs and other journalists over the years by making sure I get out to events, stay active on social media, and do a lot of breakfast meetings! For me the networking is one of the most enjoyable parts of the role… I love a chat!
