We recently connected with Sejal Thakkar and have shared our conversation below.
Sejal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I spent the majority of my legal career career practicing as an employment law attorney, specializing in defense. From 2003 to 2015, I navigated the complex landscape of employment law, representing various clients in legal matters. While this path allowed me to develop a deep understanding of legal strategies and nuances, I realized it wasn’t the perfect fit for me. I’ve always been more inclined towards conflict resolution and fostering positive workplace environments.
The turning point came when I recognized an opportunity to leverage my legal background and experience to educate and empower others in creating healthier workplace cultures. In November 2017, I took the leap and started my own training and consulting practice. Instead of the jury room, I found my calling in the training room.
I began using my knowledge to proactively guide organizations, helping them establish better workplace practices and prevent conflicts before they even arise. The ability to make a positive impact and contribute to a more harmonious work environment became incredibly fulfilling for me. This journey allowed me to align my passion with my profession, offering a fresh perspective and focusing on what truly resonates with me.
After the birth of my son, I made a significant decision to step away from my law firm job and transition to working from home. I was fortunate to have cultivated strong professional connections, which allowed me to continue my work remotely.
Simultaneously, I began exploring new avenues that aligned with my evolving interests and goals. I started teaching employment-related topics at a couple of universities, delving into workplace investigations and becoming involved in anti-harassment and diversity and inclusion training. This expansion of my skill set enabled me to diversify my offerings and contribute in more ways to different organizations.
To further establish myself in this new direction, I proactively engaged with various networking events, and became a member of the local chamber of commerce as well as the Society for Human Resources Management chapters. The period leading up to 2015 was characterized by a strong drive and dedication to my new pursuits.
In 2015, I decided to re-enter the workforce full-time and joined the University of San Francisco as a Complaint Resolution Officer, specializing in EEO investigations. Over the course of 2 1/2 years, I gained valuable insights and experience in this role.
However, in 2017, I ultimately made the bold decision to venture out on my own once again. Drawing from my diverse experiences and expertise, I established my independent consulting practice. This step marked the culmination of my journey, where I combined my legal background, teaching, investigative skills, and commitment to promoting inclusive workplace cultures.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The hardest part about leaving law practice was a combination of factors. • Firstly, there was the financial aspect – stepping away from a stable income source and navigating the uncertainties of starting a new venture was a challenge. However, my desire to be at home with my son was a non-negotiable for me, and that priority helped guide my decisions.
• Additionally, I had invested significant time and effort into building my career as an attorney, so the idea of leaving behind that investment was emotionally difficult. The unknown future also weighed heavily on my mind, as I ventured into uncharted territory. However, as I embraced these challenges and opportunities, I also recognized the potential for growth, fulfillment, and the chance to align my career more closely with my passions and values.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

While I value the experiences and skills I gained in law practice, I’ve embraced the change and growth that came with pursuing a different direction.
