Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ambre Stewart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ambre, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Who you know. You can have the education, the experience of photographing straight out of the womb, top tier equipment, and beyond talented at your craft as well, but that doesn’t always lead to your work being profitable. All of these are valid, but the most important thing you can do for your career in photography is network. I have found profitable work from strangers seated next to me on a plane, friend’s neighbors, jury duty, and even dating apps. While you may not have been lucky enough to be born in a position of privilege by association, you are capable of overcoming that obstacle by putting yourself in new situations and interactions.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I have had a camera in my hand since I was four years old. Some say I’m a photographer, some a story teller, others say a documenter. I simple want to capture images of all things at all times. My preferred is both digital and 35mm landscapes, but I often work in weddings, live music, and macro often. I have worked with many clients that describe themselves as “awkward” and tell me they’ll definitely need help posing. Achieving these clients becoming comfortable is key to the images I am aiming to create. To get that outcome I have practiced posing with many friends and researched lots. I would have to say what sets me apart from others is my up front personality, when I am working with a client I’m honest when something looks good, when it looks bad, but in a funny enough way that it relieves the pressure many clients feel when in front of the camera. If there is anything I would like my work to be known for is that I put absolutely everything into it. Everything I have.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I have been working for years on a the goal of visiting all 50 states, 48 by driving. I am currently sitting at 40. While I do have a passport, what I am striving for is see as much of this country as I can, as it is now, before visiting other locations. This country truly has much to offer, the difference between states, cities, locals that live there, the landscape, everything. I want to see it all.

What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
Leaving people with some of their favorite images they have of themselves. Photographs they’ll continue to show friends and family for years to come. The happiness of a satisfied client is so so rewarding.
