We recently connected with Tanqueray Towns and have shared our conversation below.
Tanqueray, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
When executives are experiencing a loss of balance in their personal and professional lives, the instinct is to look at calendar management in hopes of creating more time for themselves to handle it all. In truth, balance is a multi-component system that depends on areas such as physical health and mental health– culminating to affect your quality of leadership. The habit of working on one component separately often brings more imbalance in the others. Imagine owning a business and having an amazing sales department but a mediocre fulfillment team and quality of product. This ultimately leads to a less efficient business with poor output and client retention.
My best advice to clients on their journey towards a balanced, optimized life as leaders is to look at things with a holistic approach. As one of my favorite old sayings goes, “how you do one thing, is how you do everything.” If you address all the areas of balance; mental health, emotional health, physical health and leadership, then long term balance and transformation can occur, the result being a happier, more efficient way of life. Instant improvements come when clients realize that, much like running an efficient, successful business, ensuring quality in all areas of life is not only possible but absolutely necessary.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tanqueray Towns and I hail from the heart of Los Angeles, the Crenshaw Disctict. I come from the quintessential stereotypes of my environment–the grittiest streets with the meekest of resources. Through sheer willpower and determination, I overcame the odds and I made it out of LA through Division 1 football at the University of Utah. I played professional football before I started my career as an in-person health and fitness coach. Since starting my online fitness training business in 2020 during the pandemic, I have learned as an executive that it was imperative for me to implement balance in my life and I wanted to share what I had learned to other executives and leaders. I invested and transformed my services to include mindset reprogramming and lifestyle optimization through proven scientific methods that promote a positive mental attitude and optimal life balance. Through years of investment and training, I have learned to master my own mind by understanding the power that is deeply rooted in all of us. Using my skills, certifications, and life experiences of failure, triumphs, and scarcity to abundance, I now help executives and high performers master their universe through the most efficient utilization of their most important assets– their bodies and brains.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The most significant lesson I had to unlearn surrounded my beliefs about self-care as a male fitness executive. I ran myself into a brick wall trying to be everything for everybody. I had the 6-pack abs, lifted heavy weights, owned a nice car and a growing business and I was still unhappy and unfulfilled. I was focused on only one area of my true balance and it left me completely burnt out. This in turn affected everything and soon my business started to decline. I had to look deep within myself, and realized that wearing all the hats and having the 6-packs abs just wasn’t enough to make it to the levels I wanted to achieve.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The information that has made me the most successful has been my understanding of complete balance as a business owner. Health is the core of everything we do and at the center of creating healthy habits that can change your life is mastering the mind. Once I incorporated the elements of lifestyle optimization and mindset reprogramming in addition to my fitness programs, it was a total game changer. The habits were sticking better in my clients and they were changing their lives for the long-term.
