We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Audra Buras a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Audra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
When I first started making money regularly as a voice artist it was a little worrying putting those funds back into my business. Whenever I would land a sizable client or project, I would invest the profit back into my studio. During the first few years I was constantly upgrading microphones, software, and other technology. It was a risk to invest that money however, it ended up being a great decision. As I scaled my knowledge and the quality of my equipment, my client list grew as well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started offering voice over at the request of my friends. I quickly realized that there was a lot more to it than I initially thought, and I became focused on improving every aspect of my business. What sets me apart is my creativity combined with my professionalism. I like to blend art and structure, or technical abilities with creative efforts. When a client is happy, I feel proud. Sometimes I do enjoy seeing the final presentation, whether or not I care about the messaging, product, or service that they are promoting.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There is an excellent book titled Superbosses (How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent) by Sydney Finkelstein. I used to work for someone who I would call a, ‘superboss’. This person was wildly difficult and emotionally abusive. This book helped me to positively re-frame that experience. I have continued to apply this philosophy of shifting perspectives effectually when faced with difficulty. I already possessed a lot of grit, however, understanding and harnessing this mindset unlocked another level of benefitting from negative experiences.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is about releasing emotion because you might not enjoy the process or the end product. Freeing our deeper emotions is the purpose for me, sometimes you get lucky and the emotions, the process, and the end product, they all align in a way which is so harmonious, that the outcome is absolutely incredible. And sometimes other people can connect to that and then experience their own release of emotion. The greatest rewards come when all of the stars align.
