We were lucky to catch up with Carla Cabras recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes, I am very happy, because it makes me free to experiment with my creativity and my taste. I honestly don’t know if I could do any other job, I think this is my path. Sometimes it happens that I wonder what it would be like to do a more “traditional” job, but I don’t know, I think it wouldn’t make me happy and satisfied.
Carla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always knew I would work in the artistic field. From the age of 14 I studied at an art high school, and later I graduated from a fine arts academy. After graduation I sent a lot of CVs and portfolios to design studios but I was ignored. This obviously affected my mood, and I would ask myself questions like “Maybe I’m not good enough.” I wasn’t taking into account that I live on an island in the Mediterranean and this type of work isn’t in high demand, and that the problem most likely wasn’t me. I even thought about moving to Milan, but the idea made me really sad, also because I like living in nature (I have a house in the countryside with my partner). However, I didn’t lose heart and started creating a lot of personal projects, I did the things I really liked, obviously I didn’t see any money (lol) but this allowed me to create a Behance profile with projects that started to get noticed. From that moment I started taking on small jobs, which ranged from logos, to film posters, editorials up to the music field and the layout of vinyls and CDs.
As far as what sets me apart from others, which I believe is my style. I don’t follow creative trends, yes, I observe them a lot, but in the end I always do my own thing. I really like the 60s/70s style, but I also love the minimal and modern style, I think this influences my works a lot, in fact I am usually a mix between the two.
It makes me proud that I made it despite initially being ignored. Looking back now I think it was right, this allowed me to become a freelancer and have “myself” as my boss, this makes me free.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
yes, there is, I would like to become an art director in the future. I think the road is still a bit long but I should be on the right one.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
May your work and style be recognized and your work be seen as an inspiration to others
