We recently connected with Jessica Muñoz and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I think the biggest risk I’ve taken was leaving my career to pursue my dreams full time. I was in a position where I worked over 60 hours a week and my business was not getting the attention it really deserved. I loved the stability and income my career produced, but I was slowly beginning to feel less happy at work.
One day I told my manager I needed a day off because my business had something that day. It was no secret I had a business, I’ve always been proud of it. She hesitated a bit and then asked me what my priority was, my job or my own business.. at the time my career was my priority as a single mother my family depended on that income but I knew that I never truly gave my full attention to my business because of my career.
Eventually I started to feel undervalued and I was in a position where I was blessed enough to quit my job and pursue my passion. It was scary and there has definitely been times I felt lost but in the end I’ve gotten to see my brand grow before my eyes, and it’s been amazing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Back in high-school I had the option to choose electives. It was really between culinary arts and cosmetology, I’ve always been girly so I went with cosmetology. My sisters were always into makeup and hair and since they are older than me they’d always practice on me.
I didn’t really think I would pursue it full time until I took the class and realized how much in my element I felt.
Although I was good at doing a full range of services makeup is where I felt my passion was. I flourished and began doing tutorials on social media.
Makeup always made me feel so good about myself and I always thought “wow, if it makes me feel this way imagine how I can make others feel about themselves” and that’s what really pushed me. Makeup was a dream that I never gave up on no matter what was going on in my life.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There was a time when I was in a pretty shitty relationship, he was abusive in many ways but I remember so many times that we argued he would threaten to destroy my makeup items, he would break my things.
The whole time I was in this relationship I was still seeing clients and no one new anything.
I was eventually able to get out of that relationship but it did take a big toll on my business.
To anyone out there if your partner isn’t supportive of your business even if its just an idea at the time, they aren’t the one for you!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Post content! All the time, the more the better!
We live in such a fast paced world that people will forget about you if you aren’t constantly posting or promoting yourself.
Be personable, friendly! I’m always open to DMs and messages from others trying to grow their business or get advice. But I’m also always open to receiving advice and recommendations..
I personally post so many times a day on my story just to stay relevant and on people’s minds. There’s no specific recipe to grow a social media presence but it does take a bit of effort and the more you put into your posts, the better the results.
