We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathan Lampone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently completed my own music video project to a song by Kelly Clarkson called “I Dare You”. She released the single right when Covid started, and an official music video was never released. I am trying to build my music video portfolio, as I am hoping to direct, film and edit music videos full time one day. I felt this was a very powerful song, with a strong message, and I wanted to create something emotionally-moving to share with others. Secretly (or not-so-secretly now), I chose to tell my own personal story throughout the video.
The entire process took me almost 6 months to complete, from start to finish. I found some local talent to act and dance in the video. I was then informed that I would get to watch the video premiere in an actual movie theatre. 135 of the cast’s family and friends got to dress up and go to a private VIP red carpet event. It was a bucket list moment for me. I used to want to act and one day appear on the silver screen, but instead, I got to watch what I created from behind the camera. “I Dare You” is now on my YouTube and website, Studio Lampone and studiolampone.com
Nathan , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up near Pittsburgh, PA, I, at a very young age of 4, discovered my love for music and theatre, and I began to sing and act in dozens of shows in different venues. I wanted to move to Hollywood and become an actor, but a few unfortunate life events happened that shifted my dream. As the years went by, I ended up working various jobs, always adding my artistic eye to each job, whether they called for it or not, but I was stuck in the 9-5 life that I simply could not handle anymore. I decided to take the leap of faith and open up my own small multimedia design business.
I offer videography and photography services, including all the post-production editing. I am a one man show.
I love to use color in all of my projects, as well as including captivating and emotionally-strong music to tie everything together. My favorite component of the work I create is the editing. Editing, to me, is what paint is to a painter. A painter has full control over his canvas, adding texture and unique blends anywhere he chooses. The same goes for video editing, and even photo editing as well.
Regardless of the project I am working on for my clients, friends, and community, I want to capture life in all my work. Whether it is making sure I capture an event when the outdoor lighting is just right, or acting like a goofball to get a child to laugh for a photo, I try to deliver top-quality content all the time.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
I mean, I have no shame in saying this publicly, but I royally screwed up my taxes. I even considered closing my business if this becomes a bad habit each year. But then I think of me sitting behind a computer from 9-5 with fluorescent lights and punching in and out for lunch, and I remind myself that screwing up my taxes is so much better for me instead!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Honestly, I think non-creatives (some, not all) just do not understand the value of creativity, and the value behind the hours and hours of our heart and soul that we pour into each project consistently. I once got into a little battle with someone over the value of art. They were a sports fanatic, and they mentioned how sports and art don’t belong together. I boldly refuted this notion, as every camera angle covering their sports involved a camera operator, and an editor. Not to mention the layout design of each stadium seat, team logo, tech crew, uniform design, team branding, and graphics and animation appearing on screen the entire game. Could you imagine sports fans watching these games without any art involved in the production? Touché, I say!
