We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caleb & Caitlin Aslor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caleb & Caitlin below.
Hi Caleb & Caitlin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project we’ve ever worked on was creating an internship for an adolescent that had a passion for photography, but had numerous barriers in her way . We ended up creating an internship to help give this adolescent photography experience, a small income, and a positive experience to help combat some of the challenges they were facing in their lives. What started as an internship became so much more. We ended up being a Host Home for the adolescent, which was a program offered through a local nonprofit. It essentially meant fostering this adolescent, but it was specifically for adolescents/young adults between the ages of 18-21 that hadn’t previously been in the system but needed somewhere safe and stable to live. This project was meaningful because not only was this young person able to learn photography as a craft and continue to develop their passion for the art, but they also started their own photography company following the internship and they are running it as a side hustle while completing beauty school. These types of projects are a good reminder that when we have something to offer, the best thing we can do is bless another person with what we have, whether big or small.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The Cavern Photography started as Caleb M. Photography when Caleb was in high school. He used profits from another company he started in early high school (yes, he was quite the little entrepreneur) to purchase camera equipment. With his equipment and a dream, he created Caleb M. Photography and began photographing events, concerts, and other small shoots such as senior photos and photos for modeling portfolios. He continued this as a side hustle into young adulthood, which is when he met Caitlin. Caleb & Caitlin were dating, and Caitlin had always wanted to pursue her passion for photography. They rebranded the company as The Cavern Photography, and it has been so ever since 2o17. Since then, we have gotten married and continue to do photography as a duo. Our company provides a wide range of photography services including photography for weddings, engagements, family photos, senior photos, maternity photos, newborn photos, headshots, and more.
The biggest thing that sets us apart is that this is still our side hustle. Caleb is in tech and Caitlin is a special education teacher. We do this because we truly love it. This means that we are able to use photography as a means to bless others as well. We are really open to being a part of auctions, fundraisers, etc. We also love teaching young people (including students) how to take photos and we have done fundraisers to purchase cameras for students, particularly those with disabilities. We have also have experience working with families and students with disabilities, which means we are very comfortable working with families that may have unique needs.
What we are most proud of is that we just love photography and love people. It’s truly not about the money for us. We do this because we want to be able to capture life’s big moments and provide people (especially those who may have limited access to nice photos) with professional photos they can treasure for a lifetime.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honestly, word of mouth is HUGE. Whether it’s word of mouth in-person or word of mouth on social media, people will market you themselves if they love you and believe in what you do. The best thing you can do to build a positive reputation is treat your clients like they are the only person in the room and build connections. We have built the coolest relationships with families all over the state just from photographing their family ever year. If you make them feel heard, seen, and comfortable, they will keep coming back. Not only that, but they will share your name with the people they love and trust, and before you know it, your client base will expand exponentially just because of how you treat and care for your clients. It really can be that simple.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the opportunity to capture something new that has never been captured before. The cool thing about photography is that we have the opportunity to stop time, and provide the client with a product that they will be able to treasure for the rest of their lives. We get to be a part of life’s biggest moments with our clients. This can look like celebrating with them, grieving with them, or being in the tension of life with them. It is an honor and a privilege to partner with clients as creatives.
