We were lucky to catch up with Jon Huck recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I was involved in a web series titled My Death Co. about people who work as Grim Reapers in the afterlife. Death is a little mysterious but it’s on everyone’s mind and it comes for all of us eventually. My Death Co. was about that and how, even though we know it’s inevitable, so many of us fight it, or worse. pretend it’s never going to happen. It’s a curious topic. It was also a unique and humorous look at the possibility of – having to hold a job after you die. Go to work, report to a boss… and your job is reaping souls. I’m not doing it any justice, but the creators, Shawn McDaniel and Ben Hammond, provided an amazingly funny and heartfelt world to work in. The show was shot beautifully and very well written. Plus the actors they put around me were so good they made me look like I knew what I was doing. A huge help. Everything about working on it felt right, like we made something worthwhile. Good art. I believe it’s still up on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcnXR1WAcfHBZ-okMml8eEg
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Not really knowing anything I moved to Los Angeles from Illinois in November of 1999. I got into the entertainment industry because my friend Tim convinced me that we could become “set dressers’ on TV shows. He was wrong, we couldn’t. After a few months of doing nothing my mom called and told me I should try stand up comedy. So if you like what I do on stage – You can thank me. If you don’t – probably best to blame my Mom, it’s her fault. She went to one Grateful Dead show and she thinks she’s got it all figured out. Even though I was utterly terrible at stand up, I stuck with it. Then in 2006 my friend Gary and I were watching TV and during a commercial break Gary asked: “What do you see there on the screen?” I said: “A bunch of freaky looking weirdo’s.” to which Gary responded: There’s no reason you can’t be one of those freaky looking weirdos.” And shortly after that I booked my first commercial acting gig. It’s been uphill ever since. music videos, print work, TV shows, independent films… all peaks and no valleys. Obviously I am kidding. Otherwise you probably wouldn’t need a paragraph telling you who I am. In short – I’m 6’3″, I wear a size 7 1/2 hat. I love making people laugh and I love you.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The most important books I’ve read in the last five years have been Eckhart Tolle’s ‘The Power Of Now’, Ram Dass’s ‘Be Here Now’, Marcus Aurelius’s ‘Meditations’ and a series of three books by Ryan Holiday titled: The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is The Enemy and Stillness Is The Key. Read these books. They will help you in every aspect of your existence,
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Buy their work – their books, their music, their comedy. Buy tickets to see them live, go to their art shows, repost their stuff on social media. Tell your friends and family about them, call every single comedy club that hasn’t booked me yet and demand that they book Jon Huck ASAP or you are done frequenting their establishment!
