We were lucky to catch up with Violet Sky recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Violet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always been a singer since I was three years old! When I was a kid, I used to watch Pee Wee Herman’s Christmas Special, and 80s singer K.D. Lang sang a version of Jingle Bell Rock that I thought was the coolest. I used to dance around trying to emulate her- and that’s when I knew I wanted to be a singer. 20 years later and I’m getting to sing on 1980s tracks that never got released, and it’s been a dream come true!
Violet , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Violet Sky, I’m 22 years old and a singer from NYC. I live every day like it’s 1989! Well, try to with a few exceptions. I run Instagram and TikTok accounts under the name @glitterwave80s, where I document my 1980s lifestyle. I have a perm, wear acid wash denim and collect records, cassettes and VHS tapes! I even drive a 1992 camaro every day! Last year, I was asked by producer David Bravo to put my vocals on some unused tracks he had from the 1980s- and I said yes! So, my music is actually from the 80s, and the only new thing are my vocals. It’s been such a fun project to work on!
I’m also an aspiring media archivist- especially recovering lost 80s movie soundtracks.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly, I didn’t even mean for it to happen! The first time I had ever gained any traction online was when someone had screenshotted and posted my account on Twitter, where it went viral. It was a big shock at the time because I had never planned on having my social media to be a big thing. I made my Instagram at the end of high school just so I could make friends that liked the same things as me because I didn’t think anyone else did! Then I got TikTok and the pandemic happened, and everyone was online on their phones. I started making 80s fashion videos to pass the time and keep up the morale and suddenly that started gaining traction too. I guess my advice would be to stay consistent and true to what you believe in! I do have to say so many of my really good friends I’ve made have been because of my accounts- so I’m really thankful for that most of all.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Oh totally! When I first started dressing 80s, there weren’t many resources online. I had to figure out how to do my hair in an authentic way with no tutorials! It was the same for my make up and fashion, it took a really long time of trial and error to get all the details down. I also started this at a time where there weren’t a lot of other people dressing this way in the modern day, so all of my 80s friends at the time also didn’t really know what they were doing! We would balance ideas off of each other and share our findings in order to get the most authentic looks as we could. Now I think it’s really great that all of the newer people joining the 80s community have Tik Tok videos and YouTube videos explaining how to get 80s fashion in a time period correct way so it’s a lot easier for them to start dressing the way they want to!
