We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bonnie Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bonnie below.
Hi Bonnie, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Before I had kids I was a nail technician. My favorite part of that job was drawing pictures on the acrylic nails. When I had my first child I was praying about a different direction to go. I wanted to have a more flexible schedule and be able to stay home with my baby. I have always loved to bake, I started when I was a child with my mom. I never really thought about it as a career until I decided to try to make my daughters first birthday cake. As I started to practice the decorations for the cake I wanted to make her, I realized how much I loved it. Right after her birthday I started to make cakes for others and now it’s been 21 years!

Bonnie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I mentioned I started cake decorating when my oldest daughter was turning one. I had been baking since I was a kid and loved that, I had just never thought about cake decorating. I started in a time when there was no You Tube, so everything was learned was by trial and error. I slowly added more dessert items like chocolate lollipops and decorated cookies. It’s been a delicious journey for sure and I have loved it!
Most of what I create is custom made to order cakes and cookies. I design a lot of wedding cakes as well. My clients often send inspiration photos to get us started and then we discuss what they like or dislike about those to create their special desserts. Art is in the details and that applies to edible art as well. I also love to come up with fun holiday treats to surprise my clients. This allows me to create whatever my heart desires and then offer it to the world! Okay, okay just my local clients but I think they enjoy that.
I like to challenge myself, even though its not always comfortable. I have made desserts for colleges, baseball and football players and teams, been featured in magazines and even gone on a Netflix series to compete. These things aren’t always the easiest for me to do as an introvert, but I am thankful for all the wonderful things I have gotten to do while working in a business that I love.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think it’s important to know that there is a lot of growing in any creative business, for both the individual and the business itself. My business has gone through lots of changes over the years. I started out as Inspired Occasions, working by myself and balancing that with homeschooling 3 little ones. About 10 years ago I teamed up with my best friend to enter a competition and we loved working on that project together so much we combined our businesses to form Inspired Sugar. In the last two years that has changed again, as my bestie went back to school to become a nurse and I am once again working on my own. Now two of my kids are in highschool, still homeschooling, and my oldest has graduated. So I think it is important to be flexible and try not to take yourself too seriously.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My favorite thing about what I do, is making people happy. I love the designing with a client and then seeing that design come to fruition. I love to see their faces when I deliver their cake or cookies on event day!
I also love to give back. I am a part of several organizations that allow me to create a cake for those in need, either because of illness other reason. I also just started my own way to give back by taking cookies and cards to groups to show appreciation, like our law enforcement. I ask for nominations from my clients so I have a contact and then my kids and I take them to the location for drop off.
