We recently connected with Alissa Wehrli and have shared our conversation below.
Alissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
The most valuable thing I’ve learned so far is that there’s always more than one way to get things done! Early on I knew I didn’t appreciate an aggressive approach to leadership and using intimidation to gain influence. I always maintain for tricky situations that it’s better to kill with kindness than steamroll over people. I’ve been lucky enough to work in film and television and stay true to these ideas, and I try my best to value each and every person on set. It’s so important to know what each person does and contributes to a film, and how we can tell these stories together.
Alissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a costume designer for film and television. I was lucky enough to start in fashion design and then organically move into costume. I found working with other creatives on set to tell stories was so fascinating and I feel really lucky that I love what I do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I see something on screen that tells the characters story really well, I just am burying with joy. Everyone gets dressed everyday, so there’s a commonality for clothes! But imaging what someone in a totally different life, with different sensibilities might choose for themselves, it’s endless. I love it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Everyone is on a unique path and there’s plenty of room at the top! Comparison is truly the thief of all joy and each of us has plenty to be grateful for. It’s easy to look on and think so one has the more idealized version of what you want, but for creative careers I think what’s closer to the truth is, everyone’s life is going to look vastly different!
