We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Lawrence . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Before I officially launched I had an Instagram page set up specifically for my business. I advertise a lot on Instagram and that’s where my first customer came from.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love colorful things, and you can tell that by looking at the polishes I offer. Ive always had a love for polish, but wanted more to choose from than what I had seen. I got into indie nail lacquer years ago, and had always wondered how it was made. I started researching how it was done, and started it as a hobby. I realized I had a talent for it. All of my friends and family liked it, and said it lasted longer than most polishes they tried. I strive to make unique nail polish, but it’s hard with so much competition out there. I have created some truly unique polish, and everyone seems to love the names I come up with for the polish. Usually I’ll have a collection in mind and I either have an idea of the colors and finishes, or I have the names picked out first. I’m very proud of the brand I created, and the leap of faith I decided to take. All of my products are handmade by me. One of the things I’m big on is customer service. I always try to make sure customers are happy, and I like to chit chat and make new friends.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I started an Instagram page for my business before it launched. At first I was posting polishes I made from my hobby, until I went through the steps to open. I had a small audience at first. Some of my followers have been supportive of me from the beginning and every step of the way. I made a lot of friends along the way too. The growth was very slow, but I work with swatchers that paint their nails with my polish I send them, and they take professional looking pictures to showcase it. The swatchers will post before I launch a collection to build up excitement, and through those posts as well as my own I started growing.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honestly social media. Instagram is still my number 1 for sales and interest. I also have a fan page and business page on Facebook. That does ok. I have a shopify store, but it doesn’t drive traffic. The only way I get sales is through posting on social media.
