Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chloe Bellande. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Chloe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I don’t think there is a specific recipe for success, but here’s my advice based on my personal experience:
– Find your purpose and have a vision
– Make a plan and follow-through
– While you experience your first challenges and roadblocks, be open to learn from failure and stay humble.
Build strong relationships with other peers or mentors by identifying the skills and qualities that THEY value the most. Some people are all about positional power (job titles, etc) rather than personal sources of power (qualities, personality, integrity). Make sure you know who you’re dealing with.
– Celebrate the small wins but don’t sit on your laurels! You should always be planning the next move.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m originally from Montreal, Canada. I’m a Post Coordinator by day, and Editor by night.
In my youth, my dream was to become a screenwriter. But later in my 20s, I dabbled into Directing and Editing by taking some workshops and shooting my own indie films. After 8 years of hands-on experience and multiple film festival awards, I applied for a greencard and relocated to the USA. Since then, I’ve worked on dozens of projects as a Picture Editor, mostly independent films. In 2020, I was selected for a training program with Warner Bros. Discovery, for Post Coordinators; that’s how I made the jump to Post Management for scripted television.
Today, I still edit side projects, which helps me keep my creative skills up to date. I edit indie films, branded content and sometimes promo clips. Storytelling is my passion and what I do best.
I think that what sets me apart from others is that I can easily connect and communicate with people from various backgrounds. Born in Canada with a Haitian background, I speak multiple languages and my family is very diverse.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a Film & Video Editor, no matter what type of project I work on, I always dig deep to “find” the story and tell it in the most compelling way possible. Seeing how it all comes together in the end is the most rewarding aspect of editing. You watch it down with the Director and you both sit there in awe, thinking: “wow…we did this”. And at that very moment, you know that you’ve left your mark on the world.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I recently completed a Certificate degree at Harvard Business School, in Leadership & Management. In my classes, I’ve learned to differentiate between the many myths of management and the realities of day-to-day management practice. Thoses classes have significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking as I have a better understanding of the relationship between “management” and “leadership” and the importance of both to organizational success.
