We recently connected with Nayeli Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Nayeli, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I’m a HUGE believer in the thought that we are capable of reaching any level of success we desire, by simply believing in ourselves and having faith that God put that dream in your heart for a reason. Our biggest limitations are ourselves when it comes to success such as self-doubt, low self-esteem, and fear of failure. What I think it takes to be successful is to have a great passion for reaching success. The assertiveness in believing that you are capable of doing what your heart desires will give you the assurance to take the risks you need, to be able to reach your goals. If you can believe, you can succeed.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, My Name is Nayeli Garcia! I’m a teen entrepreneur in Houston, TX. I’m the proud owner of my small business Heavenly by Nayeli. Growing up I always had a passion for arts and crafts, I loved hand-making things, painting, and drawing. This gradually led to the start of my small business, Heavenly by Nayeli. With the help of my amazing parents, I started off with hand-making resin jewelry in May 2020. I designed my website and started promoting my accessories on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. About 3 months in, my accessories had gained a lot of attention online and my social media platforms began to grow as sales also started to flusher in. At the time my small business took off I was only 14 !! I stuck to hand-making resin items for about a year until I decided I wanted to change my brand and target audience. After much consideration and research into what would best suit my business, I discovered my passion for beaded jewelry making. I have expanded my product range over the years to consist of hair accessories, keychains, phone charms, bookmarks, and tote bags! I began to regrow my small business as I now had a new target market. I have been blessed enough to have my small business be successful in such a short time frame and at such a young age. I’m now 17, and I have been making beaded accessories for almost 2 years and running my small business for 3. I have faith in God that this is only the beginning of what’s to come for my small business & there are many other blessings on their way! The message I like to contribute to others is that your age, ethnicity, and gender are not a limit to your capabilities and that everything is truly possible if you’re willing to work hard for it!!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
A majority part of my social media growth has to do with posting reels on Instagram. What I found helpful regarding gaining tips and techniques to make my posts/reels gain more publicity was learning how the algorithm on Instagram works and following marketing experts on social media, as they do post many helpful tips. For example using trendy audio, specific tags, finding your designated niche and target audience, etc. Overall, to any small business owners who are just starting to promote themselves through social media, the advice I will give them will be that consistency and patience are essential when you’re newly building your social media platform.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Starting my business I’ve had to change many things in my daily life regarding still being in high school and trying to efficiently manage my business. For example, I have to pivot in managing my time properly to have a priority in being successful in my academics, extracurriculars, and as well on my business all in one. Pivoting my life to my business meant I had to develop better time management. Nevertheless, it does become a challenge especially when I have a week full of school workload & activities and still have to create content for my business, make products, and package orders, etc, since both my business and academics are priorities to me. Although it can be stressful at times to have many responsibilities at such a young age, I enjoy my unique lifestyle and how much I’ve accomplished at my age. It makes me feel proud of myself & excited to see how much more I can achieve in my future.
