Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tisha Morris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tisha, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
The entertainment industry is going through the biggest transformation we’ve seen since the transition from silent movies to talkies. Not unlike that era, technology is the driving force for the changes. Add to this the imbalance of corporate profits that encompasses many sectors, but with the entertainment industry taking center stage as to the tug of war between union workers and executives.
Aside from the WGA and SAG strikes getting resolved, the studios are having to reorganize their streaming and viewing models to adjust their balance sheets. We’ve been in the wild west of content since the advent of streaming, but this level of content curation was never sustainable. So now it’s back to the drawing board to see how to manage viewer expectations with corporate profits.
On the bright side, Barbie bailed out the box office with the biggest summer hit in history—just in time. Greta Gerwig proved that female-driven characters can pay off big. I think we’ll see a resurgence of “going to the movies” again, this time, not just with the big action thrillers.
Tisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an entertainment attorney with a focus on representing writers, directors, filmmakers, authors, and producers. I took a hiatus from law for several years to become an author in the self-help space. During that time, I learned a lot about publishing, content creation, and being a creative entrepreneur. After my fifth book was published, I decided why not help other writers do the same and so I re-entered the practice of law with the mission to help creatives manifest their projects on the business side.
Having both a creative and legal background, I feel like I’m able to understand my clients—their hopes, fears, concerns—and have their back in negotiating deals in their best interest and ultimately for a win-win outcome.
I like to think of myself as working at the intersection of entertainment, publishing, technology, consciousness, and creativity to amplify diverse voices and help people tell their story for a better world. Telling story through film, TV, books, and new media is, in my opinion, the best way to open people up to what it means to be human and to create more empathy in the world,
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2018 I saw the film RBG at the local movie theater in Pasadena. At the time, I was in full promotion of my latest book release. I walked out of the theater with tears rolling down my face. Seeing the positive impacts that Ruth Bader Ginsburg made using her legal brilliance, I knew it was time to return to the practice of law. The knowing came with emotion of purpose and some dread as I had spent considerable time intentionally leaving the practice of law in search of a less stressful career. However, I couldn’t un-know that this was what I was supposed to do. This also came around the time of the #metoo movement in Hollywood, which gave me even more purpose in being a force for good in the entertainment industry.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Growing up I worked in my dad’s pharmacy. He was one of the last independent pharmacists outside of Nashville, TN. The secret to his success was his integrity and the personal approach he took with each customer. His customers trusted him. That’s the integrity that I strive to emulate and it’s what my clients have come to appreciate about me. From there, it’s word of mouth. In the entertainment industry, it’s a relationship industry and knowing who you can trust is everything.
