Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Latoya Mathews. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Latoya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
At 18 I decided to terminate a pregnancy. That decision left me feeling like I had no value, or couldn’t be forgiven. I knew if I felt that way there were other women feeling the same. I want women to know that God can use our past. That no matter the past pain, the past hurts, or past mistakes it can be used for good. Pain can actually bring us freedom if we surrender.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Latoya Mathews, healing coach, transformational speaker, best-selling author, and founder & host of the three-day retreat The Free Woman. I help restless post-abortive women of faith find freedom and forgiveness as they reconnect with God.
At the age of 18, I found myself sitting in a small MS Delta Health Dept hearing three words I never thought I would hear. The nurse began to tell me, “you are pregnant”. I didn’t hear anything after that. Everything she said sounded like the teacher from Charlie Brown whomp whomp whomp. A newly graduate, on top of not having a healthy relationship with my mother, I knew there was no way to keep the baby. At the time, it wasn’t a hard choice, but the torment that followed was harder.
I made the decision to terminate the pregnancy.
That night I found myself sitting on my bed asking “what did I just do?” For ten years, I was tormented, and I prayed daily to God for forgiveness.
It wasn’t until my pastor introduced me to a book by Lisa Bevere called “The True Measure of a Woman”. A book that changed my life. She asked two important questions. 1) What is it that you have in your closet to clean out? 2) What do you have to offer to others? I knew I needed to clean out that stained piece called abortion. I also told myself I didn’t have anything to offer to anyone. Why was I even here?
It wasn’t until several years ago that God began to really nudge me to tell my story. I ran because I wasn’t ready for judgment or ridicule. Finally, I took the leap and found the courage to tell my story.
Since doing so, I have found confidence in my identity and started The Free Woman Program and The Free Woman Retreat.
I’ve been able to help women heal from past traumatic experiences and unlock the doors to their freedom. It is my heart’s desire to see women whole, healed, and connected back to God so they can live out their dreams. To know that they are worthy.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Having the courage to tell my story on different platforms around a taboo subject. Also, sharing with transparency and honesty what I’ve overcome during this journey.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source has been word of mouth. It is always amazing to hear how someone found me or came to me for assistance. To think that my clients think enough of me to tell someone else about my services is humbling. I don’t take that for granted.
