We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kanise Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kanise, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?

If I knew then what I knew now when it comes to release my music, I would’ve started way earlier and done a lot of different things. I would promote it online a lot more. And not been afraid to “do too much” because there’s always a new person that hasn’t seen your music yet.

Kanise, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’m Kanise and i’m a singer and songwriter from Tallahassee, Florida. I’ve been interested in doing music since i was 15 and released my first song, “Wish you Well” in 2018. Being an artist helps me articulate my thoughts and feelings to the world when I haven’t been able to through life. It takes a lot of discipline and risks but i’ve have amazing experiences and made a tribe along the way. My dream is to be able to make a living where all i have to do is wake up and make art each day.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson that i had to unlearn is that the goal is more important than the journey. The journey’s been just as rewarding as the end goal. Also one big thing i had to unlearn is that putting music out is enough. Fans aren’t going to come to you. You have to go out and get them. After covid i learned to promote online instead of just simply releasing music and it changed everything.

Have you ever had to pivot?

My love of music drove me to marketing and event planning. Throwing my own shows and pushing those events was not what i was expecting. But it’s a skill i acquired to get my project out there.
