We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenya Gray. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenya below.
Hi Kenya, thanks for joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I decided to start my business when I was homeless so at one of my lowest points in life. In addition to my full time work, I had been working part time conducting sessions on weight loss and weight management and I was really good at my job. I loved standing before people, interacting with them and helping them to change their lives by changing their practices. I was fired from my part-time and I believe that part of the reason I lost the job was because I am African American and I did not see many that looked like me in the company. I knew that I wanted to start my own business because I wanted to continue to help others get fit and add a faith conponent to it. I decided to get training and certification in fitness instructing so along with my psychology background and work in my former job, I knew I had the tools to help others. I started conducting classes and sessions at my church and letting people know about my sessions through social media and word of mouth. A lot of my work in the community has been acts of service where I was not getting paid. I believe that it is important to give back and establish yourself and eventually you will be blessed. Because of my presence through the county, I have had many opportunities to serve people and actually get paid doing it. I have been invited to conduct workshops, speak at conferences and retreats in my community and abroad. My best advice in starting your own practice is to invest in yourself. Never stop getting training and education in your field. The knowledge you obtain is not only for you but for the people you serve.
Kenya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my fitness business because I struggled with my weight and still do. Once I was able to change my life through fitness, I wanted to help others do the same. So after working at a weight loss company for five years, I decided to start my own work. Through my business, I provide life coaching, healthy lifestyle coaching, personal training, nutrition coaching, fitness classes, workshops and fitness events. I also became a published author and wrote two books pertaining to my fitness journey and providing inspiration and resources to help others with their personal fitness journey spiritually, mentallly and physically. I am proud of my work within the community and I value that my clients feel that they can talk to me and I understand their struggles. I love that I have been able to inspire others to pursue their goals.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In my business, I don’t always see a return financially and at time, I have wanted to give up. I have often questioned whether it is even worth it. At the time, someone will contact me because they needed help and they did not know where else to turn. I realize more than ever that this is a calling and not a job.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
It is important to keep yourself out there. Don’t assume that everyone knows who you are or what you do. You must continue to market yourself and show people the value of what you provide.
