Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherry Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sherry, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The reason my husband and I wanted to help families that are raising kids other than their own due to addiction. We had a dear friend that lost his daughter due to addiction, as well as our own daughter that battles the issue, they both have children that are affected by the disease. We felt the need to help families that may not be set up to care for a child or could not afford the extras that kids need. I started for that reason but now I hope to help all children get the things they want and need to fulfill a happy life.
Sherry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We started to take in used kid’s items like toys, books, games, baby items and pass them back on to other families that could use them. When COVID put a halt on what I was doing I reached out to the community and collected items for backpacks of toiletries for foster kids. Last year we had an Angels & Dragonfly gift program for Christmas and helped 300 kids get gifts. Now I have implemented a birthday gift program which we take balloons, candles, banner, card and new toys in a gift back for a child’s birthday. This is our first year having a Back-to-School Drive we are providing 300 backpacks to kids in the community.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I had to personally fund the startup costs of incorporation, setting up a 501c3 and filing fees. After we received our 501c3 I could then apply for grants, fundraise and take tax deduct able donations. In 2020, I held our first Annual Food Truck and Vendor Festival at Mountain View Winery; they donated the land to hold the event, vendors pay a fee as a donation and that is how we raised funds to pay for our website, insurance and purchse items we need for the kids.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started on facebook, instagram and emailing information about what we are doing and events we had planned. I post daily photos of items that were on hand, I started with a few flowers…and they told 2 friends and they told two friends to 1673 followers on facebook, 275 followers on Instagram and a list of a few hundred on my email list.
