We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juls Ochoa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juls below.
Alright, Juls thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Sooner. I started drawing at a young age, but lost it once I hit high school. I got involved with other activities , lost focus, and blew it off. Since I started creating again, I constantly catch myself thinking about where I’d be if I had never stopped all those years. But I’m so grateful to have found myself again in my art and be where I am as an artist.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Art class was definitely my favorite all throughout elementary and middle school. I would draw all the time at home, mainly animation. It wasn’t until high school that I chose to let it go and focus on other hobbies and extra curriculums. I never thought I would be an artist in all honesty. Back in 2019, I was living in Austin and that was the first I lived outside of my city and away from my family. Being there I was able to really find myself and reconnect with parts of myself I thought I lost over the years. I didn’t even go back to drawing, I went straight into painting, just as a hobby. It wasn’t until I moved back to Houston where I made my first sell, it was so random, too. It gave me a huge boost of confidence and I didn’t want to give up, I wanted to see how far I could take it. Now, here I am doing what is my second interview as an artist. I never expected for art to be such an important thing in my life again, I guess it was truly meant to be.
My purpose is to hopefully help others in their own journey, whether it’s healing, spiritual enlightenment, and facing parts of us that we don’t really like to share with others. Majority of my work came from my inner child, all of this is really for her. She just wants to share herself, be seen, be understood, and let others know it’s okay to not be okay all the time.
My art is growing with me and I can’t wait to share more of myself with the world.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve pivoted so many times, I guess you can say I’ve lived many lives. I’m not afraid to start over. Speaking with other artist, I was able to learn how to start an art business that will help me reach financial freedom and that’s where I’m at right now. Starting over and seeing if this works for me. So of course it brought my work to a halt and lots of anxiety about whether people were going to forget about me, and thinking I’m not doing enough as an artist. Then I look at my journey and realize I have nothing to worry about.
Every time I’ve started over, I’ve gotten closer to my goals and have created something better, whether that’s in my art, or my life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The art of doing nothing. Life is so beautifully chaotic, you have to “stop and smell the roses” sometimes.
I’ve gone through creative blockages many times, as other artist, that I’ve learned the best way to gain inspiration is to do absolutely nothing. You never know what beauty lies in front of you if you’re busy worrying about the next move.
