We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Sheirra Marci a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sheirra, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?

Burned out, feeling unappreciated, and stressed from my role in retail management, I decided it was time to tap into my true passion. Being a retail manger allowed me to obtain key skills that assisted in supervising, training, and developing staff members efficiently. However, it was not enough. I wanted to do more. I needed to do more. In 2013, after leaving my full time role in retail management, I was determined to do something more meaningful with my time. I was spending a lot of time at the football field with my son who was playing football for the first time at age 11. Being a single mom, it was essential to maintain different streams of income, but make time for my son. In addition to managing my household and supporting my son on the football field, I was also a full time student. I was only a few months away from obtaining my associates degree when I was approached by my first client. One evening while I was at the park with my son for football practice, a parent overheard me talking about school. She was impressed with my passion for learning. She asked, “do you tutor?” I was not expecting that question, but I responded immediately: “I do not tutor, but I can.” Before that moment, the thought of tutoring had never crossed my mind. From that conversation, Marci’s Creative Nspirations LLC was born. She was the parent who set things in motion. Not only did she help birth the idea, but she encouraged other parents to try my services as well. It was one of the best decisions I made to date. I knew this endeavor was worthwhile because there were so many students who needed the additional time, attention, & support to achieve or enhance their educational goals. I knew there were many parents who would find value in having a service that would ensure success. I was humbled and grateful for the opportunity.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is Dr. Sheirra Marci, Director & Tutor for Marci’s Creative Nspirations LLC. I started my business in March 2013, after 14 years in retail management. I had a desire to do something more meaningful with my time. All it took was one parent approaching me to tutor her kids to birthed my business. In June 2020. I obtained my Doctor of Education in Adult Education. I am a professional, passionate, experienced, & effective tutor who takes pride in seeing all students succeed. I have experience tutoring students as young as four years old and graduate students who were as old as 33 years old. I am experienced to tutor individuals of all ages which makes me versatile in the industry.

After leaving retail management, I discovered it was time to tap into my passion and help students reach their full potential through high-quality tutoring. By offering affordable group and one-on-one sessions, I quickly became popular among my parents and students. I have worked with students of all ages to help enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses on a level that supports confidence-building. I use a customized, effective, and efficient direction that supports learning and self-encouragement. Through my unique and personalized approach, my students are able to develop study habits and effective learning strategies that last. My greatest joy is watching students succeed and unlock their own potential. The things that I am most proud of is seeing my students improve their grades, obtain the necessary scores on standardized tests, and improve or enhance their self-confidence. Often students are not sure if they can succeed. Therefore, by building self-confidence, my students can consistently believe in their abilities to be successful.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

I have to admit, word of mouth and Google have been my best source for new clients. Older clients always refer me to new clients and that has served me well. When parents meet me and I work with their students, they are always eager to introduce me to other parents. Often, there are other parents in need of quality and affordable tutoring services. I am always grateful when I speak to new parents who were referred to me by a current or past parents. My business profile listed on Google has generated clients as well. It is essential that I keep phone numbers, hours of operations, and website information updated so potential clients can reach me. By keeping my profile updated regularly, it has allowed parents to reach me and hire me for their tutoring needs.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

“Resilience” is the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. I decided to share this definition because it conveys what being resilient represents. Due to the things I have endured throughout my journey through life, the title of my second book is Resilience which will be released December 2023 or March 2024. I have endured a lot on my entrepreneurship journey. There were times when tutoring was not as consistent as I needed it to be. I had parents who canceled tutoring services without providing the proper notice. I also experienced losses. There were times when I wanted to stop tutoring, but I could not give up. Through the inconsistency and the losses I kept going. I always wanted to have at least three students at one time since I work a full-time job. I quickly learned having one consistent student was worth more than three inconsistent students. I continued to fight. I continued to offer high-quality services. I continued to brand my business and do those things I felt were best. Due to my drive and passion, 2023 has been my most successful year in business. When things get hard, I know if I keep fighting and keep pushing, I will continue to tackle my goals and be successful.
