We recently connected with Beatrice Hyppolite and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Beatrice thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
During my transition from being a graduate student to a working professional, a pivotal moment in my life, I was inspired to embark on the journey that led to The Bea Word. For years, I had identified primarily as a student, and suddenly finding myself in a new phase of life left me feeling uncertain and, at times, overwhelmed.
It was during this significant life transition that I realized the need for a platform like The Bea Word. I had personally experienced the challenges and uncertainties that come with pursuing higher education, particularly in the field of public health. The path to becoming a public health professional can be complex, filled with decisions about graduate school, career choices, and personal growth. It dawned on me that many others were likely facing similar struggles and could benefit from guidance, support, and inspiration.
Motivated by this realization and driven by a desire to make this transition easier for others, I decided to channel my passion for mentoring and motivating prospective graduate students into something tangible. I wanted to create a space where I could share my experiences, offer valuable advice, and build a community of like-minded individuals who were navigating the same academic and career challenges.
When I decided to create The Bea Word, I knew that I would be putting myself on a public platform where many individuals often showcased only the most polished and perfect versions of themselves. In the era of social media, it’s common to curate an image that portrays success, achievement, and flawlessness. However, I chose a different path. I was willing to share not only my successes but also my challenges, uncertainties, and moments of self-doubt.
While The Bea Word is a relatively new platform, it’s been incredible to witness its growth and the formation of a small but engaging community. Balancing the demands of my professional job with the commitment to developing The Bea Word and providing consistent, valuable content was no small feat. However, the rewards have been immeasurable.
Beatrice, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My journey into the world of public health and The Bea Word took a unique turn when I decided to pursue grad school during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a time of uncertainty and upheaval, and the world as we knew it was changing rapidly.
Starting grad school under these circumstances was undoubtedly a risk. The traditional classroom experience shifted to remote learning, and the sense of community and in-person interactions that I had anticipated were suddenly replaced by virtual connections. It was a challenging adjustment, to say the least.
But in the midst of this uncertainty, I saw an opportunity. I realized that my experience navigating the complexities of grad school during a global crisis was a story worth sharing. It was a chance to inspire others who may have been facing similar challenges and uncertainties.
I dove headfirst into my studies, using the digital tools available to connect with professors, peers, and mentors. The Bea Word became not just a platform for inspiration but also a space to discuss the unique challenges of being a grad student during these unprecedented times. I shared tips on staying motivated, maintaining well-being, and finding a sense of community in a virtual world.
What I’m most proud of is how The Bea Word evolved during this period. It went from being a personal project to a lifeline for many grad students and young professionals seeking guidance and support during the pandemic. The small but engaging community we built provided a sense of belonging in a time when it was needed most.
So, while the decision to enter grad school during a global crisis may have seemed like a risk, it ultimately shaped my journey and the mission of The Bea Word. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, resilience and adaptability can lead to unexpected growth and impact.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One important lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that success is solely defined by traditional metrics like grades, titles, or accolades. The backstory to this lesson unlearning begins during my early academic years, where I was conditioned to believe that these metrics were the only indicators of achievement and self-worth.
I was always a diligent student, striving for top grades and pursuing academic excellence. As I delved deeper into my studies and started The Bea Word, I encountered individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life. Many of them had impressive journeys and stories of personal growth, even if they didn’t fit the traditional mold of success. It became evident that success was more than just the grades on a transcript or the letters behind a name.
The unlearning process was a gradual one. It required challenging the deeply ingrained beliefs that had been instilled in me since childhood. I began to appreciate that success could encompass personal development, resilience, the impact I had on others, and the pursuit of my passions.
The lesson I unlearned was liberating. It allowed me to embrace a more holistic perspective on success and to encourage others to do the same. It taught me that true fulfillment comes from aligning one’s actions with their values, passions, and the positive impact they can have on the world.
It’s worth noting that this lesson is one I’m still unlearning, especially as I navigate the journey of growing a social following for The Bea Word. In the world of social media, it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers game, focusing on likes, followers, and engagement as measures of success. But I constantly remind myself that the true value of The Bea Word lies in the impact it has on its community and the meaningful connections it fosters, not just the size of its following.
