Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Isaac King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Isaac , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Well, being born and partially raised in Los, Angeles, it was nearly impossible to avoid the film and entertainment industry. I remember training in acting from a very young age, around 7 years old or so. I was in a few commercials and received stunt, acting, scene study and other various classes for the industry of acting specifically. When my family moved to Waycross, Georgia, there weren’t as many opportunities available, but I found some in local, high-school and independent theatre. From there, I knew I wanted to be in the industry permanently so in college I studied creative writing and performing arts, starring in several plays and having several of my writings judged and awarded as the best amongst the other participants.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well I got into the acting industry permanently following graduation from college. I starred in several independent works and even had a small role in the upcoming “The Color Purple” reinvention. From there, I met a lot of helpful people and maintained a steady flow of projects ranging from independent to industry items. I think one of the major things that distinguished me from the rest was versatility and the ability to form a compelling character by looking beyond the lines and script. This method has continued to help me grow as an artist and improve my standing in the industry.
Being near Atlanta, one of the major production hubs of the country also helped me in building solid and long lasting connections in order to further my career in the industry.
I was also assisted by entrepreneurship. I own a cafe called “Purrfect Tea” located here in Waycross, GA. It allowed me to spend the time necessary to cultivate my skills and craft by allowing for more freedom and ability to focus, practice, and travel when the need arises.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the major lessons I had to learn during my journey was looking for the spaces in between the lines. One of the most common misconceptions regarding acting is that you JUST read lines and try to emulate those. While that’s true to an extent, acting is truly about reading in between those lines and looking for the deeper story. It’s like solving a mystery, the lines are clues, but they’re only as such to help getting to the bigger story, the bigger idea of the character and how they should be portrayed.
The biggest representation was during the table read for an upcoming production. I remember reading my lines to a T and completely memorizing the larger sized script I received. During the table read, the director remarked how while it was good that I had everything memorized, they didn’t put a heavy focus on that. Instead, they wanted me to be able to read the spaces between the lines. The reactions, the subtle character details, what they did in response and how they got from line to line. Building a solid backstory, even if one isn’t there is one of the major things I’ve learned that help in building a compelling character and thus, a compelling performance!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The thoughts, attitudes and actions one gets to portray on stage or on screen. Life has a way of being mundane and “ordinary” at times, one of the benefits to being an actor is the ability to explore the extraordinary, the ability to be bigger than life and portray characters with a colorful life and colorful personality. You get to truly let loose and be as grand as you want to be. Acting is being able to release those emotions learned with different experiences and put them on full display. The joy of finding relativity between yourself and the character is a joy like no other. You feel what they feel, see what they see and paint a picture so vivid that it transcends just the visual and audio aspect, it becomes its own world.
