Alright, Vanessa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My husband and I invested in a property for our children’s college fund during a downturn in the housing market. Later, we sold it to finance another investment (Wed Mayhem). There were sleepless nights when I questioned if I was comfortable with the potential loss. Yet, the recurring thought was ‘what do I have to lose?’ This was hard-earned money, but it could be earned again, hopefully through this new investment. My family was always there for me. The risk was substantial, but the reward of getting our investment off the ground and supporting my children while pursuing my passion has made it all worthwhile.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Vanessa Mir, and I began my journey in the wedding industry as a wedding photographer in Colorado. However, it was during the pandemic that my focus shifted. While filming a styled shoot with a floral designer, I had the opportunity to interview her for the project. This interview opened my eyes to the passion and dedication that wedding vendors bring to their clients. Inspired by their commitment, I created a website (Wed Mayhem) that assists brides and grooms in planning their weddings. It features videos and articles filled with expert advice from seasoned wedding vendors.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned the hard way that working hard doesn’t mean sacrificing my sleep. In the beginning, I felt like I had to finish everything on my to-do list every day, even if it meant staying up late. But then I realized that I was the only one putting pressure on myself to do these things that didn’t really matter for my business or my personal life.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
One of the keys to leading a team is to make them feel appreciated and recognized for their good work. I always try to give positive feedback and praise to my team members whenever they do something well. But I also don’t shy away from pointing out the areas that need improvement, because nothing is ever perfect and we can always learn and grow from our mistakes. I think people value improvement, both personally and professionally, and by being honest and constructive, I help them achieve their goals.
